was it loose or missing & draining the fuel? surely not, you would see the fuel under the bike.

Was there a puddle under your bike when you started it up? Or a trail of gas back to your garage?

You got it MAX.
With the bleeder screw open fuel comes out but after a minute or two it stops. So I know there is a fuel stoppage and wonder if it is a sticking float needle. so I decide to pull the fuel line off the tank and see what comes out, first a stream then a little trickle then it just barely drips. So I take the tank off and decide to check/clean the petcock and tank still is full but nothing comes out the VENTED cap when it is set up on end. I cleaned some crude from the petcock and reassembled then took the cap apart YIKES 6 little springs all over the place and now I have a puzzle but a fun puzzle. Simple stupid fuel tank cap that wasnt venting properly and stopped the fuel flow in a somewhat random manner. If I had let it run a bit longer the very first time I would have had it.Just didnt give it long enough. |

That vent is a simple thing to overlook but is critical to the fuel supply in its own way.
I still dont know why it plugged up and there are two vent holes, one with a ball in it and the other had some fUZZ in it that I probally shoudnt have removed but... well..... its gone. |

So if you would have taken the cap off and rode it you would have been fine, correct?
Nice to know if it happens to me. |

Yep if I had taken the cap off or just set it so it was a little loose it would have been fine to get home with.
If I had just let the carb bleeder screw stay open a bit more when I first looked at it on the side of the road in my sub I would have seen that the fuel is being stopped. And instead of taking the carb off first I could just have pulled the fuel hose from the tank and checked to see if fuel is flowing from there and that would have simplfied everything. It is actually a strange, rare problem and it wont stop the fuel totally and it changes depending on how much air gets into the tank. Our bikes dont have a fuel cap that twists on, they have two spring loaded locking tabs and no vent tube like the dirt bikes have they do have the locking gas cap though and the cap has two vent holes in it. |

My cap vents well, too well. :? I always have gas on my tank. I'm really careful when filling, paper towel and all. Then when I pull away it leaks. I'd like a better cap, (chrome, man I like chrome) even if I have to carry another key around all the time. The new cap key won't be the same.

I would have guessed a slightly clogged fuel filter ( if you had one installed) letting in very little fuel. A clue for me was the little gooey stuff you found.
Glad you found it. It can happen to KLR gas caps too. Actually the little vent hole under the cap.

That little vent is just to easy to overlook but I know it is important for proper fuel flow.Just wish I had found it sooner.
I did clean a lot of stuff from most everything I looked at so it was all good in the end. It may save someone else some headache later when it happens to them. |
