Handlebar vibration damper

A fishing weight the size of a small egg, flattened with a hammer and screwed to the end of the handlebar. I did one side only, and compared it to the other side with the engine racing. It reduces...

Anyone know TBR7 spring rate

My front forks are bottoming out with the longest extensions I could jam in. (Took 2 of us to hold it in while starting the nut.) I think I need stiffer springs, but I don't know how stiff. Does...

Seems like the main advantage of a thick tube is chafe resistance. That's an issue, but the extra weight and money would probably be better spent on a good rim liner.

I've had plenty of locks fail to open with their key, especially when exposed to the elements, so I fear being locked out of my tank more than I fear gas thieves. But if I parked in the hood, I might...

Same problem. I did a phosphoric acid slosh, followed by Red Kote. (Fuel tank liner.) You can get the phosphoric by the gallon at Home Depot as "Metal Prep." I used it straight, but apparently it can...

tank slosh

My tank had some rust too. I sloshed it with phosphoric acid (It's a blue liquid called "Metal Etch and Prime" at Home Depot.) Apparently you don't need it full strength, just a couple of cups then...

Update: Rear reflector

Texas requires a rear reflector, and I'm not sure whether the taillight lens counts, so I mounted the stock reflector under the license plate. It fits perfectly, with a little shaving.

I checked out the angle before I cut, and splash just can't reach my back. The tail still extends well beyond the rear tire.

Simple tail mode

IMO, the stock tail is too long. To make your tail look like this, cut off everything that doesn't look like this, then remount the license plate and install standoff license-plate lights ($10 on...

Clutch grab/judder. Anyone found a solution?

My clutch grabs and judders on takeoff, instead of smoothly engaging. Good oil helped, but it's still annoying. Apparently this problem is common for many decades across many machines. Does anyone...

Help - Fuel sender mount bolts spinning

The fuel sender is held down by four square-head screws caged in a metal bracket. The bracket is welded on, and is not tight enough to keep the screws from spinning. 3 of the nuts are frozen. I tried...

Be advised that pod filter will probably strangle your engine if it gets wet. Paper filters look cool and filter fine particles, but they swell when wet and stop passing air. This is such a huge...

Are you just seeing a hesitation on rapid twist of the throttle? This is a classic problem with carbureted engines, and the reason for an accelerator pump (present on most cars and some bikes) to...

Aggressive nobbies on the front tire: Do they matter?

I put real nobbies on my TBR7, and I like the improved rear-wheel traction, but my new front tire has a low spot where the rim won't seat no matter what I do. (I've tried lube, sledge hammer, 10...

AGM is not gel. Real gel batteries are rare and not that great. Low self-discharge is another advantage of AGM over flooded. After three months the AGM might still have enough charge to start. I...

Changing tubes is likely to be your most frustrating motorcycle repair. You need a prybar to remove the tire, and that's likely to damage the bead. If you use a prybar to reassemble, you're likely to...

New muffler was $8

I replaced the massive straight-pipe muffler on my son's 125cc with an 8HP lawnmower muffler. It sounds good, nice and deep and still loud, but not as loud as it was. Also shaved off a couple of...

Here is what to do about rust

If you ever worked in an outdoor steel industry, you might have known this as "Ospho." It's phosphoric acid, and it converts rust into a hard black crust. Just spray it on the rusty bits every week...
