Getting into 1st gear
Ok, I have bike together, put in battery, lights work, blinkers with sound etc.
Gear light shows 4th gear. When I click gear shift it goes to 5. I cannot seem to click lower or higher to get to N, 3,2,1?? The engine is not on, I am just testing gear. |

With the engine off, rock the bike backward and forward while stepping on the gear selector. You'll feel it stop as the gears engage that of course being your Q to press down to get into the next gear. I had a old Honda ATC that wouldn't go into 1st gear to save its life - especially if it was cold. Also, make sure that the recommended amount / type of oil is onboard.

I concur with daddy. I had a 1979 Suzuki that had a gear indicator light and I couldn't change gear if I was in a stationary position unless I rocked the bike back and forth a little. It didn't matter if the engine was on or off.

I agree with the others. If you are waiting at a stop light and you have difficulty downshifting, you can apply pressure with your foot while releasing the clutch slightly (don't release the clutch all the way). This combination of actions will coax the gearbox to downshift one gear. If you need to downshift another gear, fully engage the clutch, release pressure on the shift lever, and repeat the process again.
