Helmet options

Full-face orMotocross w/goggles...Which is better for street riding? Are they both legal? What exactly makes them legal? I kind of like the look and practicality of the MX (sunvisor), but could use a little input. I've almost convinced my wife to let me pull the trigger on a Roketa from XXX!!!

I currently use a DOT MX helmet and goggles on the street.

It's fine for low/medium speed cruising but it's hard on the neck and loud at anything over 40mph.

Turning your head at 60mph is downright scary when the wind catches your peak.

Yeah, if you're gonna do much street, I'g go with a full faced helmet. Like Frostbite says, they are much quieter at speed.

dlunt posted this link in an earlier post when I was asking about helmets. It's a long article, but gives some good information.

http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/ge...helmet_review/

I was lucky to find a slightly used, never abused, full-face flip-up HJC helmet. It's louder than the regular full-face, but it's very convenient for taking a drink w/o taking the whole helmet off. Plus my sunglasses fit under it.

Welcome to the group! And good luck convincing your wife

I used MX one for my KLR at speeds of 100+, but my visor was vented well.. and you learned quickly not to look up at 60mph -- I think it's more of what you're used to and feel comfortable with... on the long cold winter rides at 23 deg. F I would have preferred a street full face.

From a legal standpoint.. if it has DOT stickered on it then it is legal in the US (department of transportation)

joeyo,
I noticed that you joined the group on my birthday! Cool.

If all I had to do was drive around the city I would probably go the route of an MX helmet just because it looks cooler and during the summer it would be cooler.

Check out Suave's....I'd probably go with something like that, but I do extended rides at speeds 45-55 daily and it would get old quick so I wear a full face.

Am partial to the MX helmet and goggles, I do own a Full face but don't wear it that often, just don't match the bike style...

Hey ambassador,
My son has that same helmet. He loves it.

I have a full face with a chin skirt for cold.

A flip up full face for convenience. (It doesn't leave too bad of marks on my bald head either!)

An open face for if it is really hot and I feel a little squidly (better than no helmet). I don't wear it often. It is getting kind of old (4yrs) too so I think it is being trashed this year.

I was given an MX helmet with my DR purchase. The guy told me he never dropped it or wrecked with it, so I may use it for my slow poke offroading.

I like the flip up full face the best. Ironically it was the least expensive on auction at ebay.
