Timing

Anyone know how to advance the timing on a lifan 200cc 163 fml engine?

Some have modded the pickup coil to advance timing. You slot the mounting holes so that you can slide it over slightly.

I was just about to post when I read this, just done it (slotted the holes that is). A rough calculation says you get about 2.5/3 degrees more advance. I see an improvement over the whole rev range, she now pulls 70+ mph on the flat. Idles like a dream from a cold start and fairly plods up hills, at times I'm using a gear higher than before.

Jonathan.

No, I haven't tried any of these mods. Interesting though.

I played around with the ignition timing on my first bike (along with other things as it was a 50cc, 80cc and finally a 125cc ) and even a small change to the timing made a huge difference so may be worth a try

Okay? Still confused. I was replacing the gasket seal because it was leaking (I used that great stuff spray gasket...we'll se how that works??) and decided to also do a valve adjustment (done before) and timing adjustment (not done before). First off the auto tensioner was not properly put together and it took me some time to figure out how to wind it up first and then place it back into the engine, but it now works properly. Second. The timing mark is spot on when it's TDC, but when I assembled the chain tensioner it moves the mark to the right about 1/2 in. I was trying to figure out how to align it properly, but you guys are saying that there is no easy way to do this?? I really have to drill some hole in the pick-up coil mounting plate and rotate it clockwise or counter clockwise if looking at it?? I really thought that this would be an easy adjustment. Not that cutting some holes would be that hard?? gonna skip it for now.

dahhh!! Pimpin Ain't Easy!!!

To advance the timing the sensor or pick-up coil is moved in the opposite direction to the normal rotation of the rotor. Not 100% sure, would someone confirm this?.

Correct. So the sensor "sees" the lump on the rotor sooner.

Depends on which side of the engine your magneto is situated. On most bikes it's on the left side of the bike/engine, so assuming the crank runs forward (anticlockwise when viewed from the side), then the sensor has to be moved clockwise.
