Dang they really got some speed. I guess if there's no threat of cars it's a different story on snow, but the few times I've tried to waddle around my backyard in the snow I always dump it immediately when the front tire slips out.

They are using spikes in those knobbies! Do you see them ?
I remember seeing Winter lake races on the Great Lakes with spikes on TV back in the 70s. Cold racing! You can buy them on Amazon today. Standard Winter Knobby mod! https://www.amazon.com/Marrkey-Carbi...078SPF3Y4?th=1

Oh yea! I suppose if you were surrounded by snow for half of every year that'd be the way to go. And apparently according to the amazon photos, it'll help you stay warm when wearing a bikini on the bike.

Anyone remember Speedway short track racing? Alcohol fueled 500 singles. Constant wheel spin with acceleration by closing the throttle. This sport goes way back. The Northern Europeans and Russians have been doing it on ice for many decades. They have fenders to protect against the hazard of 1+” stainless spikes they use. Road Racing’s knee dragging was introduced by Finnish GP racer Jarno Sarrinen in the 70s from his ice racing technique.

Short track MC racing is making a comeback, sort of, in the Midwest. I'm too old to try it now.
In my misspent youth, I put screws in the rear tire of my Honda S90. There are so many lakes in SE WI that I could go from town to town via lakes and barely legal snowmobile trails and never be on the road. There was some ice racing on some of the lakes but nothing sanctioned. Usually teens and twenty somethings with a death wish and no access to their parents sleds.

#8 sheet metal screws is the poor man’s method of studding up your tires for ice ,works great but not legal for racing .
I always rode my bikes in the snow in winter ,snowmobile tracks were full of wonderful round whoops ,which made for a ton of fun in the snow with no studs or any other prep .Back in the day ,the sleds didn’t have any suspension to compete with a bike ,but they have got things much better now .The biggest issue was the wheels completely filling up with snow ,made it feel like the bike doubled in weight .My can am mx bikes really worked well in the snow with the rotary valve rotax engines . More recently ,we started using snow bike kits and they are pretty wonderful now . |
