Hi-test?
What grade fuel are you using? 87, 89, or 91 octane?

87 too. The marvel oil won't hurt anything, but it is not necessary. I do use it in my tractors since they are old and stubborn and I don't use them everyday.

I use the top grade, I don't know why?
Maybe I shouldn't?

I guess that's fine if you want retarded timing. It essentially retards your timing if you have pre-ignition issues like knocking....Seriously...It's really for higher compression ratios than what we have. The octane rating of gasoline tells you how much the fuel can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites. When gas ignites by compression rather than because of the spark from the spark plug, it causes knocking in the engine. Lower-octane gas (like "regular" 87-octane gasoline) can handle the least amount of compression before igniting.

I have a 07 Lifan gy-5 pushrod engine. Owners manual says 93 octane or higher. I use the highest I can find. I used 87 octane once and noticed that when its hot it would ping at low rpms when I accelerated.

My GPZ550 like mid grade or higher. It would knock on regular. Allen

Mine seemed to knock pretty bad above 6k during acceleration with 87, so started using premium and she seems happier.
I think the Viva engine has 10.1/1 compression ration for some reason. Ever hear a 1 cylinder diesel?

I don't mind spending extra on gas or oil for my bike. With what the wife spends on the dogs 8O , I figure I can spoil my horse a little.

My take on this subject...
I use the cheapest I can buy. My reasoning. These bikes are being used in a bunch of third world countries. I am sure they are not getting the quality of fuel that we get here in the the states ( I know they didn't in Italy when I lived there 90-93) and they run fine. So why pay more for fuel when I can use the money for other things. I have not had any problems with my GY since I bought it almost three years ago. I do run high-grade in my MZ though as it is a completely different machine.
