Limiting Speed on grandson’s new Xpro Sail 150

I got my grandson a new Xpro Sail 150 for Christmas. He’s 13 and knows how ride. But hes coming off a minibike and this 150 is going to be much faster. Is there a way to limit the top speed without killing torque too much? Thanks.

If he's 13, just tell him to take it easy at first until he gets to know the bike better.

I remember being 13...
If my grandpa had bought me a new 150 when I was 13, I'd have had that thing on the roof as soon as he turned around, so I could go all Evel Kneaval with it asap. I'd be jumping the Mississippi WOT before school on Monday.

Man! You and me both! That’s what scares me about him! I’m hoping he’s got a little more sense than I did. He’s gonna have to stay close and in site for a while.

Yeah. I’m definitely gonna give him a sit down Christmas morning. I think he will be fine. But it would be nice to be able to keep that thing around 30 miles an hour for a little while. Until he gets a good feel for it.

You could probably put some sort of spacer in the slide that keeps it from opening all the way.

Yeah. I thought about that. But I’m afraid that would hurt the low end torque. I wish there was an easy way to govern the top speed without sacrificing punch.

Torque thrives on small throttle openings. It'll hurt top end, but it's not like it'll lose so much torque it won't be able to take off. They use throttle stops on CRF50s, but that would probably be too obvious (and effectively do the exact same thing). Just try it, I guess. Either that or you could weld a washer into the header pipe, but you'll probably run really rich then.

Why not reverse the process we use to gain top end on enduros and go to a larger rear sprocket, smaller front to actually give him more torque and less speed?

cheap, simple and effective.

That will also greatly multiply the torque, it might make him more prone to whisky throttle/unintentional wheelies.

Yeah. It will increase torque more. I guess that will be better than a high speed crash. His mini bike tops out at like 28. But gets there pretty quick and he’s handled that just fine. But I know this dirt bike is going to be a pretty good step up.

A thought here, what a great grandpa to give such a nice gift to a 13 year old! I think maybe protective gear would be the best choice now. Maybe Dad and Mom could really finish off that nice gift. Just thinking ouloud and remembering more than 50+ years back and not even wearing a helmet. Good gear and training, that 13 year old will get along just fine with that bike��
