Lifan GY5 or GY2

I found a dealer right down the road from me. He doesn't have any GY5's, and said it would be over a month until he gets more. He has one GY2 left he said he would sell for 1300. Would you guys order a GY5 from motoxtreme or is this a good deal?

Whats the general opinions of the GY2. I cannot find to much about them.
Heres a pic:

Re: Lifan GY5 or GY2

I have an 06 GY-2. A few differences off the top of my head:

- Smaller fuel tank
- Larger rack
- Slightly lower seat height?

There may be others.

Those are the big ones. I would hold out for a GY5 unless you can get the GY2 for alot less than $1300. Closer to a $1000 and it may be a deal.

I have a GY2 also. Bike has been overall good.

Hooper sells the GY2 for $1400, and you have to assemble it yourself. For only $1300 and a fully assembled bike, I think you got yourself a good deal, assuming the bike is assembled by a knowledgeable and competent mechanic.

kator, I don't think there are fully assembled bike with local dealer support for $1000.

This bike also appears to not have the counter balancer. Is that correct? I assume thats what the hump on the front of the never gy5's is.

You are correct, that is a non balanced motor.

I have the counter balanced gy-5 it still viberates pretty hard compared to other bikes I have ridden.

also they swaped the rear disk for a drum brake on the 2007's not sure why they reverted to the drum. have been told it is cause the disk locks up more.

Only complaint that I have with the 07 I have is I was under the impression it was the OHC engine. upon farther inspection and a recent tear down for the valve adjustment I discovered it was the old skool pushrod.

I've had a counter balanced and a non balanced lifan, the difference on mine was severe. I'm very happy with my balanced engine, maybe there is an issue if yours is vibrating with the balanced motor? Did it do that from day 1?

I believe that is why they swapped to the drum, but I don't think there really is a flaw I think they are just commonly out of adjustment, my 6 did this because I neglected to adjust it when I set it up, but it was an easy fix.

I have not ridden any other china bikes so I realy do not have an accurate comparison. I do know this bike is nowhere near as smooth as my old CB360 I used to have. The vibration is not severe and yes it has been there since day one.

I do not really have many bad things to say about the gy5 I ride it everyday and have logged about a 1,000 miles on it so far.

You have to realize, American Lifan no longer carries the GY-2, so your bike will be an orphan. I don't know what sprocket is on that particular bike, but the GY-2 came with the 56 t rear, something that will need changing right away.

The GY-2 sold by Hooper Imports is a good bike, and has the 46 t rear sprocket as stock. It is not an orphan bike like the American Lifan GY-2 is.

I didn't have the GY-2 option, but I did order from Brian at MotoXtreme. I've been pleased with my bike for the little time I've had her thus far, and I have no complaints w/ the dealer. Everything was fast and easy.

Best of luck.
