Temp & Smells

Got the bike out for another short ride after adding the heavy gauge battery ground cable, putting additional slack in the chain and double checking clutch adjustment.
Passed 25 miles on the odometer this evening. The sense of pride and accomplishment is overwhelming. Not single major breakdown yet. I credit the great advice offered on this forum.
It was very cool during the ride. No warmer than 55F. I don't have anything smoking off the engine anymore like when the exhaust paint burned off & the clutch was smoking due to poor adjustment by the owner.
Anyway... The bike is still stinking when I pulled in the drive after an easy 5 mile ride. Curious if this is just normal smell from factory paint burning off and it will eventually go away? It smells like a combination of burning header paint and dog vomit.
I put my hand on the clutch cover. I could only hold it there for about 5 seconds before my hand got too hot. Curious if this is what would be expected? I understand it's a wet clutch, sharing engine oil, but have no idea what engine oil temp should be. I could point my HF laser temp meter at it and get reading but, would good is a number without a reference?

It is an air cooled engine, the temp is going to sometimes (as in often) exceed 300 degrees and it will go from 250 or 275 to 400 as soon as you stop moving air around those fins. It will be its hottest within seconds after you turn off the engine.

This is why motorcycles use 50 weight oil.

Mine reeks.

It never stopped stinking and I’m over 4500 miles.

It sure is an odd smell, I’ll give you that. You described it fairly well. Ha ha ha.

OK. Good to know others experience the same smell and temp. dynamics. Thanks for the comment on the oil temp. I'm running 15W-40 Rotella T4. The smell and oil temp were my last two 1st China bike owner concerns. I'm going to move past the initial assembly and adjustment phase now and into the "ride the crap out of it" phase.
Finally, nice weather in Milwaukee this weekend. I'll be able to do more than take it around the block a few times.
My friend lives next door to the Outlaws clubhouse. Maybe I'll ride it over there and ask to become a Prospect.

I think it is mostly the coating on the muffler, especially the catalytic converter, which gets really hot. I got better on mine, though it hasn't gone away completely.

Mine still smells after a few minutes especially on the main roads (higher rpms at sustained distances). And I've got over 1000 miles and no catalytic converter. I didn't notice it as much with the aftermarket exhaust though.

You know that smell when you walk into Harbor Freight? Take that smell, at heat the hell out of it. That's what you're smelling. It's "Eau de China".

The smell is probably the cat, same as cars some never stink and some never quit. The bike will breathe better if it were hollowed out.

I've been 2 China several times. big cities & small cities. There's some truth 2 the smell resembling odors in China. Will just leave it at that.

I got in a longer ride and have 75 miles on it. I was a very windy day. I stayed on the city streets. I'm in no hurry to find an assembly mistake I made at 55 mph. This smell issue has to be resolved. Even as windy as it was, this thing stinks enough that it takes the fun out of the ride. I'm going to swap out exhaust system for aftermarket. Couldn't hurt, might help.
