Pod filter ??
I gutted my Brozz's catalytic converter, and will probably be buying an aftermarket performance muffler. I have retuned my carb after de catting it. If I get a pod air filter will it give me any performance gains over stock airbox? My bike has not had the head ported.

I'm probably in the minority here, but if you're using the stock style carb, the bike is pretty stock, and the box and intake are sealed good, then I'd keep the box.
Getting rid of the box would save a couple pounds.

I might be the only one that believes you should keep the stock air box when you run any carburetor and with all installations. There may be ways to adapt different carburetors to the stock air box and keeping the stock filter only if it seals well. And if it didn't seal well or I wanted the "best" filtration, I would install a POD "foam" filter inside the stock airbox.
A foam POD filter with filter oil applied I believe is the best possible filtration system and why not run the best. |

An idea on the foam pod for stock airbox. I saw a post where a guy took a stock HAWK filter, cut the filter out of the frame leaving the rubber gasket then silicone UNI flat filter media (available on Amazon) to the filter effective creating a re-usable and oil-able stock filter. I once made one for my Magician (pay attention Magician owners). If you can make the airbox tight, maybe using that aluminum looking metal tape or duck tape and/or silicone that would work good.

Adding a pod filter can add some performance, but it's not anything spectacular enough to require a re-jet either.
The main issue with the air boxes is that they aren't actually sealed all that well. If you can seal the lower section to the middle section that holds the filter with some rubber or silicone, it will greatly help in keeping the dust out. Then you have to keep the intake tube between the air box and carburetor a consistent shape. Most of the time it is twisted and collapsed. It is also usually not always sealed all that well to the air box and can use some help. Lastly, keeping the oil buildup in the airbox to a minimum is the last challenge. It's going to slowly happen over time with that crankcase vent tube no matter what you do. Personally, I would cap off the airbox and route the line elsewhere with a breather filter if possible. Others have added a PCV valve to the line.
