Helmet Selection- Pros and Cons of different types

Boy, helmets have changed alot since the 70's when i used to ride.

I'm thinking basic protection, but will let me ride and see in the rain when needed. 50 to 100US tops. Is that realistic??? :?

I have two DOT helmets, one is a MX style for when I ride on the trails, the other is a full face with a shield for street. I bought both off of ebay for less that $50 each...

You are right about the helmets being different from the seventies. My old Bell Star was alot heavier than my new helmet. I got a full face HJC helmet new off Ebay the other day for a buy it now price of 80 bucks. It was local and I was able to pick it up the next day. It is also vented with closeable vents for anti fogging and cooling.

I like the look of the supermotard/dirtbike helmets and the goggles dont fog up like full face, but when your doing 70 with a strong wind the strreet helmet is much better. Also you can see much better in a full face, plus its easier to carry when u go to the store verse goggles and helmet, plus you can wear sunglasses,plus smoked out face shields plus, bla bla bla, but I love the way the dirt bike helmets look

When I had my Honda 550 street bike I had a full face helmet and I didn't really like it. Now that I got me the dual sport, I just got a new dirt bike style helmet. Fits nice and feels good on my head. Only $40 clams online.

i am wearing a very geeky looking helmet. it is faceless but i bought that cheap plastic face thing for it. no doubt it would offer no protection for me but at the time when I bought it, it was the only XL helmet for under 100.00 that they had in the shop and I was eager to get on the road.

As to my preference, I went full face street. In the rain it should keep me dry. It seals pretty good and with the vents closed, should be warmer in the cold.

My neighbor bought his first bike a few years ago. He started out with a full face and used it till it got really hot. Then he bought a 3/4 helmet for use in the heat.

Choice is all yours though.

My wife and i went to look at the local Motorsport shop and they had tons of helmets, but couldn't find one i liked. Bonnie said she had seen an Cycle Accessory shop across the street and back a way.

So on the way back we stopped there and there was a closeout table with a couple helmets.

There was one cream colored open-chin (dunno what you call it). Slightly used HJC i think with a flip up shield for $25. So i grabbed it (it was a large and fit great).

Figured it'll be a little cooler on swealtering days and don't plan on exceeding 55 any time soon. Has some sort of little closeable vents in the front, too.

One of the Yuma Wal marts has (had?) Bell helmets which is where I bought mine. I got it for $70 or something like that because it had been in one of the WalMarts that didn't sell them and was brought back in as a return--talked the manager down $15 from $85.
