Can't Kick Start

I have tried and tried to kick start my Magician, but it just won't work. Every bike I've had, I kick started, but why won't this Hondroid do it?

Hi Magician16. I'm no expert on this forum, but I couldn't kick start my bike until the valve clearances were right. I would definitely start by checking that. Here's the tutorial that I followed.

Make sure you don't confuse hundredths of millimetres and thousands of inches. Megandan gives correct, clear information in the third post of this recent thread.

Good luck!

Once the engine is broke in, carb tuned and valves adjusted it will kick start. I recently rode my hawk for 2 weeks with a dead battery. 1 or 2 kicks is all it takes. But new there was no way i could kick start it.

OK bike has just short of 500 miles, valves are at .0025 and .003 in. The carb was right, at 42 pilot, 1 3/4 turns, and 105 main. When I adjusted the valves, I tried a 110 main, and that's definitely too much, starting cutting out at 52 mph. I'll change it back to a 105.

I could kick start my Hawk new. It's all about the pilot and idle mixture setup and the technique. I had to use full choke, but 2 or 3 kicks was all it took. The trick was to flip the choke to half after it started before it would bog out and die lol. When I installed the pumper carb, kick starts were a real breeze. One or two good twists of the throttle to get the accelerator pump to squirt some fuel into the intake, kick, and it would fire on the first or second kick each time.

I haven't had the patience to kick start mine either, the valves have been adjusted but I didn't choke it because it is so hot here, I'll try that.
I had just told one of the guys at work yesterday that I hoped I never had to kick start it.

glad this thread came along

If it is hot enough out, full choke will make it hard to start. In that instance I just hold the throttle slightly open when I kick it over. Sometimes half-choke can do the trick too on a warmer day. I only use the choke as a cheat on moderate temps (70's and 60's) and cooler days.

Just so you know, I don't really ever kick mine over other than just to do something different lol. E-start is my friend. Kicking over a motor with higher compression is... fun.

Ok, I've got the 105 main back in. It runs strong up the full rpm band. It still won't kick start yet.

Accurate.

Main won't do a thing for kick starting, unless you are holding the throttle wide open, in which case have fun kicking into a concrete wall lol.

Focus should be on pilot jet and/or idle mixture. Lean idle mixtures in particular make for a pain in the ass kick start, and if you are kicking with the throttle opened a little, the pilot jet would then come into play.

I wasn't successful until I added a pumper carburetor. Once it was warm it would fire.
