It's an air injection system for emissions. It works off of exhaust gas pulses and by adding more oxygen it burns off more of the hydrocarbons.

i too wondered what that was but i also had another question or two....
  1. is it necessary?
  2. does it degrade performance?
  3. any issues if an aftermarket/different exhaust was put on

?

If you put on an aftermarket exhaust you should remove it and pluq all of the corresponding barbs/ holes. Otherwise you will get backfires and possibly other performance issues.

It is known as a pulsed air injection system and almost all modern bikes have it. It is a completely passive system that uses intake air from the air box and pulses from the cylinder to draw in said air.

Is it necessary? Depends on the person being asked. It's purpose is to add oxygen into the exhaust before the catalyst to help ignite any unburnt fuel more effectively and get the catalyst up to temp faster and operating more efficiently. For clean air and catalyst effectiveness, yes. Otherwise, no.

Does it degrade performance? Nope. Not even when the exhaust system is changed.

Any issues with aftermarket exhaust? Yes. the systems are generally setup to work well with a factory exhaust system. Any changes to the balance of the intake and exhaust tend to throw the system off, which in turn causes more frequent afterfires (like a backfire, but through the exhaust - aka flames from the tail pipe, pops, and bangs). This can then in turn damage and burn out muffler packing much quicker.
