Front wheel speed sensor...

Hi, my current dual sport motorcycle has a digital speedometer/odometer and tach, with analog fuel gauge.



The speedometer doesnt work anymore. I tried replacing de wheel speed sensor, which is very rare, and ended getting one very similar. I installed it, but only registers half speed (aproximately when going 80 km/h new sensor shows 40 km/h)



Been reading a little, and discovered my old sensor had 4 magnetic elements, versus 2 of the new one. It had small spaces, so since the old rotor does not fit with the new casing, i teared it, removing 2 magnets, and put them in a cross pattern.


Didnt work, heck, even the speed was reduced to half again (now registers 20 km/h when going 80 km/h )


I am not very knowledgeable with physics ,so i was thinking it i put the magnets in "wrong polarity" (so they are behaving like a 1 big wheel element, hence the speed divided by 4) if that can be achieved or if the magnets are weak and they are faulty in first place.


What i can do ?

I don't have a ton of experience with the speed sensors, but I think you are on the right track with your thinking. It is possible that the magnet polarity plays a role. Your cluster is set to read X pulses per revolution, run it through a basic math formula, and display the result in kmh/mph. If the polarity is reversed on a magnet, it may not pick up that pulse properly, and thus not register, reducing the displayed speed, so if 2 are missing from what should be 4, it will read half the speed because it takes two revultions to get the 4 it is looking for.

I think you’re better off with a 4 magnet from the start
I tried taking magnets out once and had weird result too cause maybe polarity?
Possibly easier but not cheap and start with another dash set up like mine that the magnets count can be changed - I don’t know where to get a 4 magnet sensor and can get complex fast hence I had mine so all things can be altered without having such issues etc
Look at the possibility if polarity of magnets is a thing?
In theory you should be ok adding 2 magnets but if that fails I don’t get as to why..

His is a stock version from another company etc
It just looks like my dash but it’s nit.
I had my supplier add the extra universal software to avoid future issues etc and be able to correct things manually so as to avoid isdues

The speed sensor you sold me reads 2x correct speed with my repined TT250 digital cluster installed on my Hawk 250. Is this because, your speed sensor has 4 magnets and the cluster is set up for 2?

Weird if so, I thought I had 4 magnet but found out 2 magnet so I changed the setting

I managed to move "positions" of the magnets inside the wheel sensor and now works a bit better (still a 10% deviation but it always have been like that), it now register the speed like before, but running beyond 85 km/h it starts to update very fast.


4 magnets in a cross pattern.



Anyways, its a motorcycle so im not pegged to the speedometer, its just to have an idea how fast i am going.

Got my wheel sensor on the way. Paid more than what I wanted to ($40) but it's from a reputable seller that knows customer service, not some clown with an attitude. So thanks to Jerry I'll soon know my actual speed and not have to judge distance in Hawkometers.
