Woops!

Even experienced riders make mistakes!

About a mile from work I was ripping along at about 50mph when I started smelling oil burning. I look down to see my header wrap making a smoke screen and oil spilling down the right side of my motor.

What happened? Valve cover bolts came loose enough that the pressurized oil for the rockers was spitting out.

I didnt lose much oil thankfully, but it just shows how important those checks are!

Glad there was no damage. The one time you don't check is when stuff like this will happen. My wife ask me the other day why are you working on your bike every time you go ride. I told her i'm not working on it but checking that everything is okay before I ride. She'll never understand, it's a guy thing. lol

Yeah, i had just checked my valves on Friday and I normally go back and recheck the bolts after a ride or two and forgot to do that this time. Didnt really lose much oil, but it made a heck of a mess.

Now Dan I'm sure the other members on here know you come to me for advice on such complicated matters as valve adjustment, plug gap, and proper chain tension.. But I can't be looking over you're shoulder all the time, so..

One of my absolute worst FUBARs was a simple blade sharpening on a customer's 3 blade mower. I somehow forgot to tighten the center blade and on the test run it destroyed the other 2 blades and left a huge dent in the deck. That was a very expensive lesson and thank goodness my boss was an understanding fellow. Dad always said "One Awwe S#!t wipes out three Attaboys" and he was right lol.

Hey, I just find the positive in every situation. My frame and skid plate are now properly rust proofed. Honestly, the skid plate probably saved my neck by catching the oil and keeping it from going under my rear wheel.

That's that safety feature I built into skid plate.

lol. I don't really use a torque wrench, just by feel. If I were to use a spec, maybe 10-12ft-lbs max. Small bolt into aluminum after all. Most Honda valve covers are in the 9-11ft-lbs range.
