Magician (Trickster) Update..
Just wanted to give an update on my Magician purchase from 1/2/19
Bike now has 200 miles. Couple Warranty issues: Had to replace the regulator, one email to TXPowersports and had the new part in about four days. Three weeks ago the rear brake switch was going bad, one email and had the part in a few days. My purchase experience was top notch from day one with them. I know some other members not. Also the fuel warning light would not work, took the sensor out and gave it a few taps with a wrench and now it works lol. OK, the bike is awesome. I only ride the street and it handles great (have 20wt oil in the forks). I'm also running the stock carburetor with pod filter and exhaust and Runs incredible, I know there is always a lot of talk of different carbs. Pumpers, flat side etc. To be honest if someone gave me a real $120.00 "real carburetor" I would not use it, the stock carb works so perfect I am amazed. Very responsive through all throttle inputs and rock steady idle at a 1350 rpm. Hit 58 mph today on gps (slight uphill) I think I was at 7700 rpm, ran out of road but feels like will do 65 mph no problem with stock gearing maybe a little more, will find out next weekend. Bike pulls very strong and gets to 55 mph very quick. Gearing is fine for me as I only ride local roads and no highways. Also want to mention I love the exhaust, sounds bad a$$ and has great flow. A little load when on the gas but again sounds great! Details below. Stock PZ30 Carb Exhaust and Pod Filter. I'm at about sea level and temps 75 - 80 today I did just pull the carb off the other day to drill the pilot a little larger, at about a 45 Keihin now, felt like I needed a little more fuel down low even though the weather is warming up, maybe due to rings seating. It was running great before but again thought it could use more fuel being I was out 2 3/4 on the fuel screw below. Now at about 1 3/4 out on the fuel screw below with the pilot drilled to a 45. Still four washers on the needle I did drill out the main jet a little more from the 120 to maybe a 125 but was too much and was cutting out at top, so now back to a Mikuni 120 and is on the safe rich side and runs great up top. Could go a half a step lower but again rather be slight rich on top. With this set up Hit 58 mph on gps slight uphill at about 7700 rpm today and pulls very strong and gets to 55 mph real quick! Should do 65 mph easy with stock gears. Engine is also pretty smooth, not too much vibrations. Maybe due to the spot on carb tune. Only negatives: 1: Speedometer is off about 3-4 mph up to 30 mph and about 5-6 mph off in the upper mph. 2: Explaining what kind a bike it is lol. Might just say it's a Japan only Yamaha model from now on. Just too much work explaining. Hope this info helps current or future Magician owners. Safe trails all.. |

Looks a lot like a Trials Bike imo., which is a good thing even if you do ride it mainly on the street.Back in the day when you could tag most anything with a headlight and tail light on it, my bud rode an old Montessa Trials bike on the street, wheelies for days on that thing it was balanced so well and tonnes of low end torque.

More Data
Bike has 240 actual miles as of today and just did my second oil change.
Had it on the interstate today. Conditions were not that great due to wind, very windy late morning. Temp was 75 and humidity at 40% at time of testing. Got it to 62 mph gps at 8300 rpm, flat ground and very very windy, had a slight tuck but not much. Running a hair rich with the 120 at these temps 117.5 main Mikuni jet would be perfect for me here in the summer. To be honest, could of got to 65mph tucked but man that wind was bad and had to let up just a little. For you guys that run Hawks and Magicians etc. on the highways you guys are brave. Not bad I guess for 5 or 7 miles with no wind, but around here people run 75-80 mph, even 18 wheel rigs plus the wind pushing you around it's a little nerving lol. I'm used to bigger bikes for freeway use. Again bike is running great with my setup, I even kick start it most of the time and only one kick. Engine is very smooth, only a little vibe at 5000 - 5700 rpm before or after those rpms very smooth. I feel on flat ground to the rev limiter and stock gearing bike will do a little over 65mph with no crazy wind lol. On my set up. Speedo gets less accurate as you gain higher speed. Speedo showed 72 mph but was doing 62 gps. Just want to put this info out there due to not so much on the Magician. I would recommend the Magician 100% for someone doing mostly street riding, I do 100% on street. |

What sprockets are you running? If I remember correctly I think its a 15/45 tooth combo. If you're riding street only you may want to gear it a little higher. If it came with a 15 tooth front sprocket you could swap out to a 16 or 17 tooth. 17/45 would be a good all around gear ratio.

I think you are right on the 15/45. Was thinking about a 16 when I first got the bike, but since ridding it the stock gearing is not that bad for me since I ride around town pretty much. In fact I love the quick pick up and go and gets to 55 mph real quick.
Maybe this winter I might try the 16 and see how it goes, although I doubt it will affect the acceleration much but will lower the rpms a little. |

That bike looks cool....... I have a Magician and it is fun to ride. One area of development that needs to be done is sourcing sprockets to upgrade to a 520 chain with gearing changes. A stronger chain would strengthen the street presentation.

I would seriously consider the 17 countersprocket, especially as you mentioned you do 100% street riding.

Great job
Great job the bike looks great! I got my Magician about a month ago and I cant get it to run . I rejetted with a 110 and shimmed with two washers yesterday. Before it would only run on full choke. Now after the carb mod it will idle but dies after more than half throttle. So Im kind of stumped at this point. Also I got mine from TX Powersports and they were awful to deal with. Glad you are doing well with yours, ride safe !

My magician
Yeah the mixture is one and a half turns out.I dont how to adjust the valves i have basic skills. But I did shim with two washers and installed a 110 main jet. Now it does idle with the choke off but just barely. As i said if i give it more than half throttle she dies. And the idle screw is turned all the way in just to get it to idle.Im really frustrated at this point.

I would say the valves need adjustment. Youtube hawk valve adjustment. Don't know if Dan has a video on valves, if he does I'm sure it would be very thorough and the one to watch. Motocheez is not bad. I think dan is oddballperformance, I think.
My valves had no play, solid tight but adjusted them before start up. |
