Day Off Project

I took today off to have a four day weekend. I was supposed to head into Chicago with Mrs. C to wander the Auto Show and see if anything tickled her fancy. Well, that didn't happen. Less than a half hour before leaving Mrs. C says she doesn't feel well and soon has evil things coming out of both ends. I sigh, change back into jeans and a sweatshirt while writing the days' plans off. Mrs. C climbs back into bed and spends the day there.

It's a beautiful day, so I decide to spend the day in the garage, clearing up some of the project list. There is much to choose from. I opt to do the second jerry can mount for the Ural.

A couple hours of farting around between runs (bad choice of words) to the drugstore for Mrs. C and to NTB to finally get someone to deal with the slow leak on Jeep tire, I ended up with this.

Used 6013 rod instead of 7018 just because it's what I grabbed. All cutting was done with the all-in-one plasma cutter and bending was done in the bench vise along with a BFH. Still have drilling, clean up, and OD paint to do. I don't think it turned out too bad for a typical Outhouse Engineering and Fabricating job(eyeballing and best guess).

Leaning towards mounting it on the front left of the sidecar.

Painted and mounted.

Mrs. C is feeling somewhat better. She was slightly ambulatory today but still spent the day in bed. Drinking ginger ale and eating crackers, which was more than she managed yesterday. Hopefully, she is somewhat back to normal by Monday.

Sure. You're only, what, 15 hours away.

BTW, that front end is looking good. Check with NAPA for a universal speed cable.

once I get it all together and on the bike I'll have to measure and see what I can find. I also need to get some custom brake lines made too. that'll be easier to find.

My local hydraulic shop, which is DOT certified, did the brake hose for my CX. Pretty reasonable, too.

Started on the 'barnone' receiver hitch for the Ural yesterday afternoon.

Amazing how much stuff I can get done when Mrs C is laid up. Didn't get as far as I would have liked because my neighbors' dog wandered over and he required my undivided attention for awhile. And it got dark.

Where'd you get the quick-release deal for the jerry can?
Please show pics of the dog.

Got the quick release thingy from Tractor Supply.

Bronco is a old guy. He's fifteen now and had four girls to occupy his time since he was a pup. Now, though, the youngest girl is a high school senior in Florida (don't understand that one), so he's kind of lonely. So, when he comes over I give him some attention. I'll get a pic next he wanders by.

More done on the 'barnone' receiver.

Major mods were needed because I have a 2wd with mechanical rear drum brakes and the receiver was designed for 1wd with hydraulic rear disk brakes. Not a big deal when you have a plasma cutter in your back pocket. I shortened the tube by about a foot because it interfered with the rear brake linkage. Also needed to notch the tube to clear a tube gusset on the sidecar frame.

Then welded a small piece of angle iron opposite the notch. That will be drilled to accept a u-bolt on the cross tube.

Drill the two holes, test fit, clean, paint, and that's done. That will wait until next weekend.

Looking really good, Cheesy! Now that we have Nugget in the oven (Ok, so that sounded a lot better in my head), the Missus has given me the go ahead to pick up a bike with a sidecar. I'm thinking about a 2017 Ural Gear Up Sahara edition. What do you think of your Ural? Anything I should look out for? I did some digging, and it looks like the 2017 is the first year they put fuel injection on them. That will equate to a lot more torque for getting around, and that makes me happy. Anything you can think of that I should be planning in the way of mods and upgrades? Any help would be appreciated.

First off, congrats again. When my oldest was expecting her first, I dubbed it 'Muddy The Mudskipper'. I just couldn't see a kid in the ultrasound picture.

As to my Ural, I can't get enough of it, but I'm weird that way. You are not going to have Honda reliability. What that means is you'll need to keep up with the maintenance, which isn't all that hard or time consuming. Oil change is 1000 miles for the carbed models, but it's only a spit more than 2 quarts and a filter. The rigs are designed to be easily repaired in the field. Also, don't expect freeway speeds from a Ural. I've seen 65 a couple of times but it's happiest below 60. The EFI units are a bit better but the weak spot in high speed runs is the final drives.

I think 2014 was the first year for EFI. The unit they use is out of Michigan. There were some teething issues(get used to that)early on but they seem to have a gotten a handle on it. I've been told NOT to rely on the low fuel light, though. The trip odometer is your friend. If you do get the Sahara, get the Off Road mapping for the EFI. There is some magic worked in the ECM that gives better driveability.

The Sahara is pretty well decked out with all you need. All I can really think of would be to add a .50 cal ammo can under the rear of the sidecar for a tad more storage. I would also upgrade the tires to Duro 307 knobbies in a couple of seasons. Nothing at all wrong with the Hidenau K37 tires but you can buy eight Duros for what four Heidenaus cost. I got that tidbit from the Ural HQ in Redmond, WA.

Don't be afraid to look at used ones. A few year old high mileage unit (20,000 km) will already have the bugs worked out. Avoid a low mileage one that has been sitting for years.

If you've never driven a sidecar rig, there is a learning curve. I equated it to riding an old snowmobile with bogie suspension. A lot of upper body English is required.

Also, spend some time here. http://sovietsteeds.com/

Lastly, a couple of threads at Advrider.

Hope this helps.
