Stalls while decelerating
I'm going through the Delphi Fuel Injection troubleshooting guide (thanks, Spud) because my bike stalls when I back off on the gas, usually coasting to a stop, usually on a cool night. Next step is, according to the sticky, check the wiring and connectors to the MAP/MAT sensor. Where, exactly, is that? It's gotta be somewhere between the airbox and the cylinder, but I get lost without a carburetor. Thanks in advance!

Hope this link opens for you. One Allen screw holds it in. It's on the right side of the intake manifold. |

I'll try the contact cleaner treatment in the morning. Thanks!

Engine Stalling While Decelerating
Check the battery voltage. Check electrical connections to the MAP/MAT sensor, idle stepper motor, and throttle position sensor. Verify the emission canister purge valve is functioning correctly. Check both of the purge valve hoses for leaks. Check the intake manifold and throttle body for air leaks. Connect the EFI scan tool/computer, and check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTC). Check the valve lash. Clean the throttle body and idle stepper motor with brake cleaner. Clean the MAP/MAT sensor. If you tried all the previous steps, and cleaning the MAT/MAP sensor doesn't fix the problem, you can also try using a higher octane fuel. If higher octane fuel doesn't help, give Gerry a call at CSC. He can help you to verify the optimum alignment of the throttle position sensor.

this sounds familiar, I feel like someone else had the same or similar problem last year and eventually part swapping found the problem and fixed it.

Gerry determined the main problem was excessive valve lash. The valve tappets had been adjusted on the exhaust stroke, instead of the compression stroke. To avoid this problem, remove the cam inspection ports, and align the marks on the cam sprocket with the marks on the inspection ports. After addressing this problem, Gerry also found a little slop in the alignment of the throttle position sensor. If all else fails, I would call Gerry, and he will describe how to diagnose, and fix this potential problem.

I'm working through all thes steps as best I can. I think I can call Jerry tomorrow and see what the next steps are. I don't think the valves are mis-set...the bike runs fine otherwise and the stalling predates my own valve adjustment. Thanks for the help!

I had stalling when decelerating problem with my F800GS. After changing out everything else they finally put in a new fuel pump and the problem went away.

Alright, here's the latest: I reset the valves at 2500 miles, and tried to adjust them to the loose side of the range. Voila, no more stalling! It's been a couple of weeks since I did the work, and I didn't want to post until I'd given it a few miles in different conditions, but this seems solid. Not only doesn't the bike stall, but I picked up a couple of mpg in the bargain...now 58 from 56. I'm happy. Hope I can do it again next time.

Thanks for posting the update; I'm glad you resolved the problem. Indeed, it is better to set the valve clearance a little too loose, rather than a little too tight.
