Thumbs Up Hawk gearing

ok, somewhere on this board someone proposed taking 4 links out of the chain if going to a 45 tooth rear sprocket from the stock 50. i advise don't do it until you have your gears on and test the chain link yourself before removing any links. put a 16 front and 45 rear on my hawk today. needed to remove 2 links.

at indicated 55 in 5th, the bike now accelerates strongly on up my local steep road up the hill out of the valley, a long big grade hill where almost all cars/trucks downshift. :} not yet fully broken in, so don't have a flat out number for u yet, but i can tell u it will be impressive. this engine is strong and could easily pull a 17/45 combo, but the 16/45 seems sweet for the hilly terrain round here where u sometimes need a top of about 65-70 sustained to keep from getting run over, but yet the bike seems to have maintained its trail low speed grunt. hats off to Ricky Power Sports on bringing in such a capable machine!

I'm running 17/45 and haven't removed any links. I agree the engine is a torquey little bugger and pulls well . I love bike that you can short shift and the Hawk fis this role perfectly. Drop it into 5th about 30 and never shift for most road rides. I live in the Blue Ridge Mts so lots of ups and downs as well .

I would love an extra gear so i could make 1st slower for mountain trails. I don't do much road riding as i have millions of acres of public land out my back door. Some of the trails are pretty rocky and steep though and on the really steep stuff i either try to get the tire spinning (HANG ON TIGHT!) or walk it and feather the clutch.......

mjstep- i am at about 1k elevation, presume u r in the clouds. i think u can find a 14 or maybe even a 13 front counter shaft sprocket which should get your first gear down near honda trail 90 type speeds you must be riding some gnarly chit! :}

I just ordered some. I bought them on Amazon. I was told to search JTF259.17 for front and I got a 43 tooth for the rear JTR269.43

Just ordered them so haven't put them on yet. Also going to be changing the tires from stock to more street tires

while on this topic I toss some of the sprocket sizes I've seen into an excel spread sheet.

Front- Rear- Ratio

15 --- 45 --- 3.00
13 --- 39 --- 3.00
15 --- 43 --- 2.87
16 --- 45 --- 2.81
14 --- 39 --- 2.79
16 --- 43 --- 2.69
17 --- 45 --- 2.65
15 --- 39 --- 2.60
17 --- 43 --- 2.53
16 --- 39 --- 2.44
17 --- 39 --- 2.29

I was thinking of going to a 44 rear with a 17 which would put it 2.59, just wondering if the bike would handle it.

Thumbs Up

4 things to consider in answering that question: your topography, your altitude, your riding weight and your carburetor. my guess is yes. i am 250 or so, live in the hills, avg elevation here -around a thou, stock carb setup. I run a 16x45 on full knobbies and can pretty much go anywhere from gnarly trails to 65 + blasts down the local 4 lane. GO HAWK!!

I'll be VERY curious to see if my coming tt250 can match up.

17/43 combo

Any clearance problem with the 43t on the rear swing arm? Anyone running this combination yet?

just put the 17 on front and will put the 45 on later.
BUT, something which is a little concerning is there is a little bit of play in the front sprocket now , like the original was a little bit thicker than the aftermarket one. should this be a concern?
