stock handlebars ID and Bar ends/throttle locks

Thoughts:
Wish the stock RX3 grips were a bit longer
Would like to install bar ends to provide a bit longer bar
Also want a throttle lock
Have used a Throttlemeister setup on my SV650 for years.
As far as bar ends, Spud-do you know the stock bar's ID?
Anyone have a throttlelock they like working with stock grips, etc?

This might be a starting point, Dan.

The inside diameter of the stock handlebars is very small, about 12 mm. In fact, I tapped the inside diameter of the stock handlebars for a 1/2-inch thread when I installed my Tusk D-Flex handguards.

I think Jay has offered a good suggestion for you to consider aftermarket handlebars. The Tusk Chub handlebars are an excellent value.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm happy with the stock bars, and if the ID is THAT small Spud, I may look at my spare set of Throttlemeisters that use an expansion plug and mod them

Stock bars on mine were roughly 1/2" inside. I put a 1/2" drill in the ends to make them round for my hand guard expanding mounts (turned down from 5/8") and the drill hardly removed much material. Spud was able to tap his with a 1/2" tap so his may of been a slightly smaller diameter inside to get enough thread for the bolt to grab ?????

I definitely got enough thread for the 1/2-inch bolt to grab securely. However, if the inside diameter is not round, I probably measured at a the narrow diameter. I also used my cheap, plastic calipers to measure the inner diameter.

I think the rx3 bar is narrow indeed..
One good alternative is a wider, re-inforced bar, similar to the Kawasaki KLE 500cc one.

FWIW, the standard VistaCruise, available everywhere, was a 5 minute install on my RX-3. I use them on 4 of my bikes (The Beemer, of course, can't use one)

Works well and the install looks clean.

Cheers,

Dan K.

Already wish the grips were longer...doesn't the Vista take up room on the grip?

Spud was saying that the ID (internal diameter) of the stock bar is narrow, not the width of the bars themselves.
Again, I like the stock bares rise and bend.

You are correct. They take up about 1/3, maybe 1/2 of an inch.

You might also consider using an appropriately sized O-ring placed between the inside edge of the rubber grip and the instrument switch cluster. I used this method on my Urals and Yamaha previously.

If you get the right sized O-ring, it will exert enough friction to hold the throttle open for 5 or 10 seconds before slowly closing. Enough time to shake out your hand, adjust mirror, etc. And it takes up zero grip space.

Cheers,

Dan K.
