SpeedoDRD Installation
Tuesday I received my SpeedoDRD from 12 O'Clock Labs, and I finished installing it on Wednesday.
![]() 12 O'Clock Labs offers a number of different models of the SpeedoDRD which are plug-and-play installations for a variety of different motorcycles. However, none of these different models employs the same 3-pin connector used by the Zongshen RX3. Therefore, I purchased the Universal Kit U1. http://shop.12oclocklabs.com/index.p...&product_id=59 After probing the 3 wires coming from the speedometer with my digital multimeter, I determined the following cofinguration. Black/Red Wire: Power from battery Brown/White Wire: Signal from Speed Sensor Green Wire: Ground To avoid cutting the main wiring harness, I decided to connect the SpeedoDRD to the wires coming from the speedometer speed sensor. Also, by removing the speed sensor, I could make secure mechanical and electrical connections by crimping and soldering the connections at my workbench. ![]() Taking the speed sensor to my workbench, I cut all three wires about 2 inches from the plug end of the unit, and connected the SpeedoDRD using the following method. ![]() I connected the positive, Black/Red wire from the speed sensor to the Red wire of the SpeedoDRD. I connected the Green, ground wire from the speed sensor to the Black wire of the SpeedoDRD. I connected the Brown/White signal wire from the speed sensor to the White wire of the SpeedoDRD. I connected the Blue wire from the SpeedoDRD to the Brown/White wire going to the plug of the speed sensor.

Returning to the motorcycle, I replaced the speed sensor on the hub, and installed the front wheel. After lowering the front wheel, I routed the wire from the speed sensor back to the speedometer.
At this point, I decided to tidy up the wiring harness to make installation of the headlight easier. Therefore, I removed the three nuts holding the speedometer, and disconnected the plug from the wiring harness. Then I re-routed the wiring harness outside the headlight mount to make more room for the headlight. ![]() Since the speedometer was removed, I also decided to trim the power outlet panels to allow easier access to the mounting bolts for the windshield. Removing each of the panels, I trimmed the bottom of each with a cutting wheel on my Dremel tool. Then I re-installed the power outlets, and the speedometer. ![]()

Finally, I connected the speed sensor to the speedometer, and the plugs leading to the accessory power outlets.

Before re-installing the headlight, I turned on the ignition key, and tested the SpeedoDRD. The speedometer immediately received a signal from the SpeedoDRD, and the SpeedoDRD flashed the appropriate signals indicating a good installation.
![]() Next, I programmed the SpeedoDRD for a negative 11.1% input to the speedometer, as shown in the following video.

I re-installed the windshield, and was pleased to note the mounting nuts near the power outlets were much easier to install.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I mounted the SpeedoDRD in a protected spot beneath the speedometer. However, I left enough slack in the wire so I can easily retrieve the unit to re-program it for corrections whenever I desire. ![]() ![]()

I really enjoy having an accurate speedometer reading, especially with a digital speedometer.
![]() ![]() I am very pleased with my purchase of the SpeedoDRD, and I highly recommend it. I am happy I made this investment to improve the accuracy of both the speedometer, and the odometer of my Zongshen RX3. ![]()

I have added a link to this thread under the Modifications subheading in the Zongshen RX3 Sticky Thread, which is pinned to the top of this forum.

You can purchase the SpeedoDRD for a price of $70, delivered, from a variety of vendors on eBay, Amazon.com, et cetera. I purchased my SpeedoDRD directly from 12 O'Clock Labs, because Brooks offered me a money back guarantee if the unit did not work with the speedometer on my Zongshen RX3. Brooks graciously matched the $70, delivered price from the other vendors.

![]() Yes, the potential group buy of the other unit has been canceled. No1Vic in the United Kingdom installed that unit on his Zongshen RX3, and it didn't work. ![]() http://www.chinariders.net/showthrea...t=14694&page=5 If you install it correctly, the SpeedoDRD works great with the RX3 speedometer. ![]()
