I have been Arrested. Well Spark Arrested.

Look what came via UPS today.

I wanted to be USFS legal and I found this on ebay.
It is the Cobra Sparky spark arrester and this one was slated for a KX500.

It was originally oval, but I easily made it round and it fit my gy2 exhaust perfectly. I use 2 sheet metal screws and the supplied clamp to secure.

I am thinking of using some stainless steel wool for adding sound deadening. I like quiet.

Do not use stainless steel wool, it will make your spark arrestor a spark generator.

Buy some standard issue muffler packing, and head to the hardware store for some 1/4in hardware cloth. Hardware cloth is a heavy gauge screen, used for everything from varmint-proofing to a base for stucco repairs.

Cut the hardware cloth into a strip the proper width and about 1.25 times larger in diameter. Pack the SA to the desired level, then insert the hardware cloth like a circular spring. A little safety wire to secure the overlap would be cool.

Ok. I was thinking that the stainless did not burn. There was an article on repacking mufflers. Maybe it was another type.

Thanks, Allen

I would also permanently attach a little chain from the SA to something very secure.

Sparkys have a way of escaping. I find them on the trails...

I used a couple of screws, but I think some strapping and more screws will be added. It is a tight fit and I beat it on with a chunk of 4x4 treated lumber.

I will probably forget the added packing material. I remember where I saw the article on muffler repacking and it was a streetbike site.

This may be only a temp fix. Just want to be legal if I am out in the woods.

Would this work?

I am not sure if it would be even worth while.

Try sticking some between the terminals of a 12V battery . You can actually use steel wool to start fires in an emergency. I don't know how easy it would be to light with an ignition source other than electrical current, but it's still probably not a good idea.

I have burned regular steel wool before. I am going to use the muffler packing fiberglas stuff. No need to burn anything down.

I haven't ridden the bike yet with the sparky installed, but it did change the exhaust note some.
