front drum brakes just stay loose after you pull them

hey guys!

im in a bind, i picked up a bike with front drum brakes and they seemed a bit loose so i tried to tighten them and i think it got worse. It seems like that dont have anything pulling the level back forward after i let it go, does that mean they need new springs inside?

any input would be greatly appreciated i cant find anything on this online.

thanks!

I think I figured it out I think I need a return spring it seems to be missing.

I'll update in a few days if that fixes it.

Do you mean a return spring between the brake shoes?

no outside where the cable attached to the outside of the drum, on my bro's there's a spring there and on mine its missing.

We picked up 2 - 1984 xr200r's for $800 and $900 last week, they are a blast but need some work for sure. They got the double carbs and 4 valve engine, should be interesting.. One smokes and one's hard to start lol, but they are pretty awesome to ride so we're gonna see if we can get them up to shape. When we start working on them maybe i'll post in the big 4 section here and you can give us a pointer or two if you feel like it

Also lube the cable and clean and grease the cam in the hub. Be very conservative with the amount of grease, you don't want any getting on the shoes.

Are both springs (#3 in your diagram) in place?
