The West has the highest prices. The Gulf Coast (heck the oil comes to you there) and the Mid Atlantic states (NJ is basically a large refinery nowadays) have the cheapest prices as I understand it.

Here it's $0.97 per L - ~$3.68 per gallon for you American types. They're practically giving it away!

What do you get for 'mileage'? How does one determine mileage in a plan? Hours per gallon?

Many variables.

Assuming normal temps and optimal altitude and no wind (These conditions never exist but I will assume so to get a ballpark idea):

True airspeed cruise at 75% power at 7,500 feet is 135 MPH. Fuel burn with those conditions is about 8 gallons per hour so 16.875 MPG.

Not bad for the speed. I doubt my Vette would get that economy at that speed. Wish I could try and find out! 8)

Depending on winds and temps and altitudes it can be +/- 30% so a good pilot had a lot of factors to take into account. I NEVER land with less than 1+ hours of fuel in the tanks.

My gas averages about $5/gallon (100 octane) but my routes are usually much shorter than driving because I can usually fly direct.

Doc, do you know of any pilots burning E85 in small planes? It's generally $0.50 cheaper per gallon than regular gas, and it comes in at around 110 octane.

Not safe or approved.

Some planes are certifiable to run on premium auto gas (Mogas we call it) but never with alcohol.

It adversely affects the vapor pressure of the fuel at extreme temparatures and altitudes leading to vapor lock. Also it's harder on seals in the fuel system leading to leaks and possible fire and death. It is also more prone to vapor lock especially in fuel injected planes.

As bad as the fuel cost is, its small compared to the overall cost of flying so we pilots just eat it. It is means not going out to dinner or a trip to Hawaii or entertaining a hot youg nurse that's the way it is :? .

We fly so we sacrifice any other luxury to pay for it. :P

Our big problem will be the EPA wants to kill our 100 octane LL (Low Lead) and the industry has not found a direct substitute.

Nope. The only piston engine planes that can run that are diesels, and they are very rare.
