Handguards

I would really like to get a different set of handguards on my bike. Are handguards universal for all bikes, or do I need to get a specific kind? I want the kind that wrap all the way out to the end of my grips

They are pretty much universal fits.

The trick is to start all the hardware partially threaded, with plenty of threads engaged to keep from pulling out, keeping everything aligned but flexible.

Start at the bar end, finish at the inside bar mount. Make sure your throttle tube doesnt get bound up, and that your clutch and brake levers are clear of the guards. Sometimes you have to mod the levers, removing ball ends.

Nice thing about good handguards, lever breakage goes to zero. That, and you can smack small trees at will.

Shea,
I refer to the stock handguards as "Hand Smashers" cause they really serve no purpose at all, a real set would you would definitly benefit from, OB1 is right on how to mount...

I've found that they at least keep a little wind off my hands while riding to work on cool mornings. On a 30 minute commute in ~40 degree temps, even with gloves, your hand can easily get cold unless you're wearing really heavy gloves. Since I don't ride in the woods, they seem to work perfectly for me as is.

But yea, I can't imagine ever trusting them to actually protect my hands or levers from a tree or branch. My worst nightmare came true as a kid on my old RM80 one day when I was running full bore along a cornfield, hit a rut and plowed into the cornfield. I can still feel the pain in my hands from the whack I got from the corn stalks as I tried to hang on and keep it vertical.
