BC/Canada Strata Age Restrictions / Charter Rights

Not sure if anyone here will really have any info on this or not, but thought I'd ask...

How are strata corporations allowed to restrict ownership based on age when Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms says you cannot be discriminated against based on age?

My cousin and sister are both looking at purchasing apartments/condos in Abbotsford, and a large majority of the units available are in buildings with age restrictions such as 45+ and 55+.

Always wondered this myself, not sure I have an answer.

Obviously, I have no idea what you're talking about but here, they have 'adult communities' where it's 55 and older to buy. My 74 year old mom lives in one and loves it. No screaming kids and Big Wheels creating racket all day. Grandkids come, visit, leave. It['s not government mandated though. Designed that way by the investors. Strange for California! 8O

That sounds like the same thing... It is a private home owners association or some similar type of group making these restrictions, but they go against normal constitutional rights.

I was reading an interesting article on this subject here: http://gated.architectureandplanning...sociations.pdf
