Sure, you could use a 250 engine from a Gio dirt bike (or similar). You'd likely be further ahead by buying a complete China bike that is wrecked and transplanting the engine. That way, you get the carb, ignition, etc.

I think the 200cc Lifan engines will drop in as well, plus you get the bonus of e-start.

Paying attention to:

The Wonder Sprocket

This special sprocket is needed to retrofit a Chinese 150-200cc engine into the Honda XR/CRF150, XR/CRF200 and CRF230 motorcycles. Without this sprocket the front sprocket will not align with the rear wheel sprocket causing severe transmission damage. Many sellers of “cheap” Chinese engines will claim that the engine fits but they have no idea of what it takes to make it work properly. Our sprocket was custom fabricated in the USA by the largest specialty manufacturer guaranteeing the highest quality.

I am not sure if the wonder sprocket it needed for the xr185. I am sure if you called hooper he would know. Since the sprockets for the xl185 are a direct fit to most of the china 200s I think that the engine is a direct fit also.
