Check battery voltage under load, connections, and the starter gearing/Bendix. I bet the starter itself is still good.

Sounds like the starter bendix may be sticking. Possibly some corrosion not letting the gear slide out.

Also make sure the battery is good and fully charged and that the connections are clean.

Probably moot, but I'd park it until I could pull the starter and see what is wrong. If there are some broken gear teeth, etc, you're grinding that into the engine every time you run it.
If it's due for an oil change, plan on a long day and pull the starter and the spur gear cover. Anything wrong there, I'd also pull the engine covers (clutch and stator side).
I think I have pictures of the stator side with the covers off. I'll find them and post tomorrow.

This is the only picture I kept from working on my stator.
You can see where the starter gear sits.
And in the upper right corner you can see the starter gear set.
You can check those gears without pulling the side cover.

Left Side Cover view

As far as the kick start not engaging, makes me think that something has broken loose and is lodged in that ratchet mechanism.

Good luck.

Check battery before changing anything.I thought my starter had gone bad, acted same as you described, but luckily my dad tested battery first and found out it was bad.Replaced it and works great now.
