I would remove the decals befor painting.Otherwise you will see a raised silhouette of your decals.

I just finished painting a headlight bucket, shiny black. I used 320 then 600 grit. I could have gone up to 1200 but didn't. Krylon dries fast 30-60 seconds to recoat. Where I sprayed it thin it came out bumpy, and thick would have made it drip. I went with a fairly heavy, even coat on the final coat. Because of the insects otside it's not perfect, but man it's close.

With my side covers, I used armorall to give some UV protection. If it doesn't go on and come off even, armorall made the paintwork not look rightat all. I armoralled again evenly. Nice, bit shinier, very even over all. I'd recommend it.

FistOfIron: Never, never, never AmoUrAll on plastic or vinyl, or anything you want to keep!

The cleaner in AmoUrAll is an alcohol based product, and will, over time, cause things to dry out, fade, and become more susceptable to cracking, etc. It's a good fix for a vehicle you're selling, but long term useage will actually cause more damage than it hides.

For side pans, windshields etc, it's better to use an old style wipe on, polish off type wax, like old Turtle Wax or something similar. It won't eat at the plastic, and provides at least some UV protection. (Clean with DishSoap)

If you really want to get spanky with it, a plastic product like KleenFLo (A Canadian Company! Wooo!) PerfectPlastic Cleans and leaves a wax residue, making it easier to clean next time, and works of Visors, windshields etc, without causing cloudiness or scratching.

Long story longer, clean plastic/vinyl stuff with a plastic cleaner. It'll last longer, and look better for longer.

Also, Never glass cleaner on anything plastic. The ammonia makes things go cloudy.

It's not likely to damage anything right away, but long term use will damage the bike over time...
