legality of engine swaps

Just curious, but does anyone know if it would be legal to swap a larger displacement engine into one of these bikes?
Seems like that might be a way to gain some added grunt, since I seem to remember seeing some larger displacement engines out/coming out.

What do you mean by legal? Like registration legal? Of course, you resister the frame, not the engine.

Well, that's gonna be the ultimate mod for me. I'm thinking of squeezing in a 400-450cc single. I figure the Suzuki DR-Z400 engine or the Honda CRF450 engine might be a good fit. 40+ hp should wake up my (S)Tank 250 2i very nicely!

Nuff said!

As long as its NOT a lifan your alright otherwise lifan will send some goons out to break your rice bowl.
(lifan doesnt like YOU messing with stuff)

Actually I have been kicking around the idea of putting in an old honda 350 twin in my dualsport but I really think it is to big.

But then there is the old rd400 from yamaha that is a twin cylinder screaming 2-stroker that what make for a quick little bike and it would most likely be able to fit.

So who's going to be the first NUTT to put in a 1000cc + 4 cylinder :?: :?: :?:

I don't know about anywhere else, but I'd talk to my insurance company first. I like to ride legal and have bases covered and papers in order. I was thinking about getting a perfect engine for my cb, same size and popping it in. I don't want to crash, and find out I'm not covered, and now owe $$$$. If I was serious, I'd pick up the phone and find out.

TeamCheap, if you want engine mesurements for a cb 350 twin motor, let me know.

I think the best bet is to look at other Chinese engines, as I think wiring/bolt patterns would be very similar, if not identical. From what I can see, the Saga 250 engine LOOKS identical to a Lifan OHC engine, but I am NOT 100% sure. I really wish someone would try this.

Remember Bataycan? I SUSPECT his big bore kits were simply stock kits from the 229cc and 247 cc China bike engines, but nobody ever found out.

I would NOT put any more than about 25 hp in this frame, even if I could. It really needs new suspension more than any other mod, in my opinion.

Kawazacky That's true.

CB350 motor (325cc's) =36HP. That and the extra weight and torque would be too much without extra metal bracing and suspension changes.

Yup.I think these bikes really only comply with safety standards with the engine size thats on them......If you upgrade I would consider making it an off-road only bike.in order to make a larger engine work you might have to modify the whole bike to be safe.I dont think a very experienced motorcycle driver or tech would advise a heavy upgrade.....any pro will tell you as with learning control and skill you need to go slow.speed is easy.slow and steady wins the race.unless you drive a Ducati, but in that case you just lost a whole lot of money when you eventually wipe out and you will if you leave all the safety up to the bike.....I wouldnt go higher than 250cc on a china bike unless your closed course or Todd Colbert! :P

Sounds like dropping in one of the 300cc motors that occasionally pop up on ebay would probably be more trouble than its worth then :(

Especially if I have to pay more for insurance.

People swap engines all the time. Just call it a replacement engine.

yurkia, if you do it you'd be the TOP NUTT.

I'd put a honda 350 twin or a rd400 yamaha engine but thats mostly because I'd love to have a twin cylinder, dual exhaust bike.
The 2-stroke would be fun but it is best for off road IMO.

I dont like the thought of a 2-stroke seizing on the road.
I think they banned them from road use anyway.(not sure its been so long)

I know there are better singles out there that would be less trouble.(SNORE-boring)

I wouldnt be doing it for max HP just somewhat increased performance but mostly the totally different one-of -a-kind effect.

I dont think you'd have any LEGAL troubles with an engine swap.

A nice liquid cooled single, 4 stroke in the 300-350cc range ridden within reason most likely wouldnt tear up a china bikes frame.

I still would not run it down the road doing 70-80 mph though.

It really comes down to what you want.
If its a bike that has a 400cc liquid cooled engine and can take some good amount of punishment then look to the big name bikes or just save a wad of cash and be happy to be riding a china bike that will get you around nicely and can be extremely fun in its own right.

Yeah, that pretty much looks like the choices in front of me.
You wouldn't even ride one of the street bikes at that speed?
