Are 428 Chains the same?

A follow up on my previous thread.

I got a new 428 chain, ( my previous chain broke).

When I compare the new Chain to the old Chain, it appears to match pin for pin in size..but then about halfway down the chain I notice the pins don't match..

The old chain appears to be slightly longer.

Question.. are all 428's the same?

All the same pin to pin length. Your old one is worn.

Old chain just has normal chain wear commonly known as "stretch". As the pins and bushings/rollers wear they get more play, which under tension makes the chain longer.

When I changed the old chain on my used Zongshen Sierra (428HD/122), the length difference between the new and old chain was about 8 cm or 3". Needless to say, at that point I was all but running out of chain tension adjustment markers

And yeah, all of the wear appeared to be concentrated in the pins and bushings. The links themselves appeared unworn, and the old chain also had quite a bit of slop and lateral bendiness between links.
