Lighter = faster
... Anybody have some cool ideas to make the GY-5 lighter, and therefore, faster?

Well, I have thought about that. I figure I could drop about 20 lbs....it'd pay off next hockey season too.

Tow it in a trailer with a Ducati...........get a bigger engine?
Remove the side panels, ride without a helmet......if you drive against traffic it might create the illusion of a faster speed!!! :P |

(*) remove the chrome muffler heat shield (2 lb), (*) remove the gas tank cover (1/2 lb), (*) remove the passenger foot peg (10 lb), (*) remove the turn signals, both front and back (3 lb), (*) remove the electric starter (10 lb), (*) remove the starter relay (1/4 lb), (*) remove the battery (15 lb), (*) remove the horn (1 lb), (*) remove the luggage rack (10 lb), (*) wire the brake light onto the AC circuit, (*) remove the rectifier because DC circuit not in use, (1/2 lb), (*) remove the ignition switch (1/2 lb). Looks like I can trim 50 pounds off the bike by simply unbolting noncritical stuff. |

There was a guy who was a member here from TT as well. He started a thread about a cheap GY200 he got from Ebay for about $800 shipped(don't remember the exact brand, and consider this was a closeout model at the time, and it was over 2 years ago, maybe three), and did alot of mods to it. He was able to reduce weight. He was very good at putting the anti-chinese bike crowd in its place, but in the end, I think he broke down and bought a new Kawi KLX 250 dual sport (I think that's their new 250 dual sport). Oh, and this was after successfully riding in a few competitve amateur dual-sport rides on his off-brand GY200.

The bikes are designed to go faster as they break-in but not from the break-in but from the parts dropping off.
If you ride it long enough and only go back for the parts that keep it running it will become very fast. There is some stuff that can go like the passenger pegs and the rack and a few other small items. You could maybe lose the gauge set and replace with a lighter/better VAPOR unit.That would take care of that speedo cable and the tiny little bit of drag it adds. Lose the heavy steel handlebars and use aluminum bars. In fact try to swap out as much steel parts for aluminum parts as you can. With the quality of the bolts you could almost swap the stock bolts with nylon bolts. NO NO just kidding |
