How many chain links?

How many chain links will I have to remove to go from a 17/56 to a 17/44?

The guy at a local repair shop said he'll remove the links for $5 if I bring him the chain. So, how many links do you think I should ask him to remove?

Again, I'm going from a 56t rear to a 44t rear. The front is a 17.

I would just get a chain breaker and do it myself. You can find them for under 30$.

You will have to find this out yourself by just overlaping the extra links of chain. Just make sure to have the axle all the way forward, and pick the tightest link that will still alow you to slide the connector link in.

I just did a 16/39, I can't remember how many but atleast 10 pin's back I think. Takes only 1 minuet to do with a chain breaker.

It would all depend on how much the chain has stretched. It's going to be in the neighborhood of 3 links but it varies. You don't need a chain breaker or special tools.. You can use a cutting/grinding wheel to cut them off yourself if you are mechanically inclined or you know how to hold a grinder. You will have to start by taking out the master link and then you can overlap the chain and see exactly. Then when your done take the $5 bucks you where going to give the guy and go out and buy yourself some burger king or put it in the China bike future mods fund!

The process is pretty basic, hope it helps

I removed 2 links from a 56 to a 49.

I seem to remember 3 links too.

I bought a chain breaker for $20 and now I will always have one.

You can do it with a grinder or dremel tool too.

I went from a 56 to a 45 and removed 3 links also. I have the Stocket Front Sprocket, Not sure on it's size....

If you don't want to buy the Chain breaker take it to the guy and have him remove it.

I did not Buy a chain breaker, and I tried the Dremel and hammer trick...It took me about an hour to get it filed down and removed...Not fun!

You just need a bigger grinder and/or hammer!

The tire sits 3 marks back on the adjuster. I think I'll use the overlap measuring test. I might even remove the link myself. If I have to spend an hour with my little arms, it's going to the guy with the chain breaker. Based on what the posts are saying it looks like it's gonna be 3 or 4 links.

$5 and a block away I would do that....

But If you have a big enough grinder, it would probably be quicker than the dremel...The hammer part was not hard, it was just useing the little Grinding Dremel bit That Sucked and took the most time...
