Check that you have a good ground from the battery to the engine.

Solenoid and starter relay are the same thing. When you get your multimeter use it first to check the voltage at the battery posts with everything off. Then check again while trying to start the engine. Then check the voltage between battery negative and the stud on the starter where the cable connects.
Solenoids do fail but its not the most likely issue. |

Just cut n solder wires easy enough and orientation doesn’t matter as it’s just a big relay
