That is very common. I did that for a while until I got enough money for a 40t rear and an O-ring chain.

Thanks Alpha! Did you need to grind/ mod the cover to the front sprocket? I plan on doing this swap in about 45 min afyer work.

It's not a Hawk, but I am running the tt-250. Dad has a 16T/69 combo 428 chain (got the 69 rear from PBI sprockets) It's a good hill climber, Dad said 40 mph @ 7,000. I rode the bike only up a few hills and a fairly steep hill I used 2nd, for going real slow in rocky terrain 1st is perfect.

I am running a 15T/50 (stock rear sprocket) 428. I think mine is geared too tall. At 5,000 rpms, 1st = 12 mph; 2nd = ?; 3rd = 24 mph; 4th = 30 mph; 5th=36 mph;; at 6,000 rpms 5th=43 mph.

I ordered a 13T front sprocket and it should be here Friday. I can post new numbers if you like.

IMO again the engineers messed up the manual transmission gearing. Needed a lower 1st gear and little more rpm split between the gears. only 6mph split between gears is not enough split, when the engine will turn 8,000rpm.

this has the tt250 not sure how the transmission gearing is between the hawk vs. tt250. This might help you decide. I have checked this calculator and it's very close to my rear world gearing on my tt-250

They are essentially identical in terms of transmission ratios.

I reccomend cleaning the chain completely in a kerosene bath, and then re-lubing it. I've used warm Gulf canning wax mixed with colloidial graphite for 60 years, but use whatever you like. That will give your stock chain every opportunity to give you good service...ARH

the cover has one and only one position that it will fit over the chain. you have to find that one spot and bingo it slides right on. a lot of folks give up and start grinding but its not necessary

the 13T fits on the engine shaft, but won't fit with the chain. The chain hits the engine.
Right now the smallest sprocket that will fit the tt-250 is 15T. Maybe that is why CSC only sells 15/16/17T front sprockets.

I might order a 14T to try, not sure. then I could go 14/56 combo. without buying a custom rear sprocket.

I use 17 front and stock 50 still here in the Rocky Mountains for all of my riding. I ride some steep stuff and it works just fine.....I still do 60-65 top speed.

Yeah NZ's kit will get you a GOOD start. You can use the stock carb as it comes, Nz's kit comes with all jet necessary. I bought a Mikuni VM26, jetting in my signature.
