TaoTao ATA250D Starting Noise
I have a 250D that sounds terrible when your starting it. It's hard to describe but it almost sounds like it trys to turn backward or trying to backfire. I'm looking for a good supplier for parts that's honest & dependable. If you have any ideas of what could be making this noise please share with me.

Chinese loves 9 rollers https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=556291834821 for that purpose. Stock is either 16 /20 Look around amazon/ fleabay that shipped in states. Read mainstream shop manual, u need proper thread locker for those bolts.

As human being says its likely the starter clutch. My ATA250D has always done it but I ignore it because it always starts right up. My other CG engines do it now and then also.

the noise isn't a squeal it's a loud almost grinding noise and it's kinda like it's trying to pop back through the carb. I felt the gear and won't let me turn it but one way but it does let me move it back & forth (side to side).

ok I have another question a friend just brought up.
my starter is a 9 gear and my starter drive clutch is a 18 gear so is that correct? He said maybe the gear combination is wrong & making the noise. Does anyone know what the correct starter gear & starter clutch gear should be. Were just trying to figure out what could be making all this noise. As I've stated this isn't a squealing sound. |

Humanbeing is saying that the typical starter one-way drive clutch has 9 rollers (or sprags). He gave you a link to a better quality example that uses 20 sprags. He also guided you towards using Loctite.
