Yeah, sad but true. There are engineering choices made in designing a motorcycle engine, and these effect rear wheel horsepower more than most people appreciate. So, suppose we take two power units, one designed the British/American way, and the other the Japanese/Chinese way. The B/A power unit will feature a chain drive primary and a direct drive transmission in top gear. The J/C unit will feature a gear drive primary, and an all indirect transmission. A chain drive primary is 98% efficient, a direct drive transmission is 92% efficient. A gear drive primary is 92% efficient and an all indirect 'box is 89% efficient. There is a trade off, of course. With the older type system there are more places for oil leaks to develop. And the modern engine is less expensive to manufacture if you have sufficient volume to offset the much more expensive tooling and machinery...ARH
