Fuel Drip

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I just bought a Hawk 250, and got it assembled, changed the oil, adjusted the valves, and took it for a test drive last night. Everything seemed great, except this evening I noticed a fluid dripping very slowly (once every 15 minutes or so) from the underside of the bike. I can't seem to trace where it's coming from. I think it's gas, not oil (smells like gas, light brown color though). I had the petcock closed, so I don't know where it's coming from. I've attached a photo of the underside of the bike. You can see the drip starting to form, but I don't know that this is where it's coming from, or just where it's ending up. The tube off the bottom of the carburetor is nowhere near or "upstream" of here. At first I though it was oil coming from the shift lever shaft. Any ideas?

Make sure the carb bowl drain scew is snug. The bowl drain hose exits near the bavk of the motor right around that area. Just something to start with at least.

I wiped it down and left it overnight. This morning there was fuel all over the petcock. It looks like it's coming from the underside of the gas tank and dripping down the petcock, and who knows where else. Could it be a ruptured fuel tank on a new bike?

It could be coming from the fuel sending unit. There is an o-ring gasket. You may have to pull the tank off and check if the nuts are tight or if the o-ring is out of place or broke.

I didn't even have 12 miles on my bike and already had to replace the fuel sending unit gasket. Didn't know it until I did my first fill up. I don't think you can just buy the gasket either, you have to buy the whole sending unit assembly: $24.00 shipped from CSC.

It's just an o-ring on my Hawk. You can find them at the hardware or auto parts stores.

Thanks guys. I'll give the o-ring a try this weekend when I get some time.

I had a similar problem develop on my hawk about 2 months in. I ended up pulling the fuel tank and cleaned the welds at the fuel outlet. The welds weren’t the best quality and I found my leak at this point.

I wouldn’t recommend removing parts from the fuel tank until you can narrow down the source of the leak.

My tank was replaced under warranty, but while I waited for the part I was able to repair the leak with JB Weld.

I had same problem after couple months of having my bike. It was leaking at the nipple going down to petcock on my tank. Txpowersports would cover it under warranty but wanted me to send the tank to them first. I didn’t want to wait so I went to oreillys and got jb weld gas tank repair putty. Worked great.

Pulled it apart and I'm 99.9999% sure it's the o-ring.

I bought my bike through powersports max out of CA. On 3 different claims, they had the parts shipped without any questions. Even sent complete assembly when it wasn’t necessary (ie. rear brakes).

There's a very slight chance that could be the problem. Looks like it was used for a teething ring.

I have a 9 month old that's always getting into the cupboards. Apparently I need to child proof the motorcycle too now.
