Rear break hanging up

Have any of you found that the rear brake caliper will hang up from time to time? Dad's does and we have to stop and crack the bleeder valve to release the pressure. We've already changed the brake fluid once. The only other thing left is to completely disassemble each component to see if there is trash in the line somewhere. Before we do this, does anyone else have a suggestion as to what would be causing this?

Make sure you haven't filled the resevoir under the side panel too full. There needs to be some air in there to take up the pressure created in the braking system when you are up to speed and the caliper warms up. If that resevoir is too full, the pressure can't "squish" the air in there, and the caliper will begin to close. This in turn makes more heat, more pressure, etc, etc, etc. Both my brake resevoirs were full to the top when I opened up the crate. I'm sure it would have dragged if I hadn't bled some out.

Ok, that sounds like that could be it. I know the resevoir is tilted the way it's mounted, so where should the top of the level be so that this doesn't happen. I know Dad has his at the top and mine is near the top. The rubber boot is also something that is in question. Should it be all the way out and into the brake fluid or should it be all the way together at the top? Could this be part of the problem?

Maybe obvious, but is there a bit of free play in the pushrod? Mine was a little tight.

The rubber gasket should be "up", fully collapsed, and you only need that resevoir about half full. Leave a good 1/2 in. of air space in there. I'm sure this is your brake problem.

Thanks!! Dad's had more of a problem than I have. He'll be glad to fix this problem. Now, if by chance the fluid is as you say with a 1/2 in of space, what next? I know I've cracked the valve on his a couple of times during a ride and let out fluid but didn't really help but for another 10-15 miles then we would have to stop again. Should I have also taken the resevoir cap off and put it back on? Another thing, I think the pad to disk tolerance is very tight when the pads are new. Mine are well worn now along with my rear tire and his aren't since he doesn't ride his very aggressively.

That's a good point Fatboy. I found the same condition existed on my brand new TSM, but with the reservoir open and the bleed valve open I was able to open the caliper enough to slide it over the rotor, but it was tight.

The only reason it would lock up ONLY after riding for a while is if the pressure buildup in the caliper cannot escape. This means one of 2 things. 1) not enough airspace in the resevoir, or 2) a restriction in the line that wont let the fluid return to the resevoir. Easy way to tell is pull off the caliper and try to push the piston back. If you cannot push it back, there's your problem. Could be something in the line, or a collapsed brake hose. If dropping the level in the resevoir doesn't fix it, you'll have to look for a restriction in the line somewhere. If the caliper was frozen, releasing the bleeder valve wouldn't make it any better, so it's gotta be a pressure build up issue as the caliper heats up going down the road. Keep us posted!!!!

Yeah that pretty much describes it. He'll be riding along fine at like 50-60 and then start noticing the engine struggling to pull. I will let you know.

Today I took the cap off the brake resovoir sure enough the diaphram was down inside it and was completely extended. I think that may have been my problem. L had never taken the cap off I could just see fluid through the plastic and that was good. Ill ride a while and report back.
fingers crossed

Ray

mine has done the same thing twice so far. ui have ordered a complete new new rear brake setup. we'll see if it helps...... i think it;s just the adjustment of the pedal though.

Mine got tight too. Caliper & rotor got purty hot... I just grabbed my 8mm wrench from my toolkit, ( everyone rides with tools, right?) popped the pressure on the caliper and it has been OK since. I am going to replace all the fluid (front & Back) with good DOT 4 fluid soon so it should be OK.

I had a lot of problems with my brakes seizing and I found that my brake line was not lined up correctly which was stopping the fluid flowing back from the brake.
