I believe I read somewhere that the top revs on our little 229cc motors was around 7,750. But I can't find where I read that now. Still, it should be near the 8k mark because other real Honda 229 engines have rev limiters at 8,750, like this one.

Even this Yamaha Boat 229 hits at least 6,200rpm according to the chart.

As far as verifying RPMs, you could use a clamp on pick-up which is only about $30, but you need a $250 tool to plug it into. The good news is that you just put the pickup around the spark plug cable and it'll tell you the revs. If someone wants to drop around $300 for one...

Not sure if anyone knows of a cheaper pickup alternative.

Wait! I found it...

The 229cc Hawk motor is rated at 14.1HP@7,000 RPM and 16.5lb/ft@5,500 RPM according to RPS.

So figure you've got at least 10% of headroom beyond max HP and I would expect the engines to pretty much hit the limiter around 8k if not before.

By the way, has anyone with a fully broken in engine tested to see if there is a rev limiter? I'm damn sure not gonna check it...

ok so good and bad news for the TT250 -

the good
- the main connector is a fit
- the engine has the gear indicator switch installed and the connector is ready to accept pins

the bad
-the pin outs on the main connector are different. this was an easy fix. I pulled the pins from the new connector and popped them back in to match the color coding on the TT250 connector - all of 2 minutes. turned on and it all worked.
- the speed pickup does not fit the wheel, this is a deal breaker unless there is one that can fit or I make some major modifications.

I am currently out of town for the weekend. Can you take a few photos for me with a piece of paper stating which speed sensor is which so I can forward them to the factory and get something else issued for it? Pictures of sending unit side by side would be great and you can actually lay them all on one piece of paper and just write above them. Currently I only have a phone with me and no computer so if you can do this I'll see what I can do for you.

I can email or msg the photos to you. pretty obvious which is which since only one has an electrical cable coming out of it

Hey MJstef,

Any chance the company who builds these can put the redline to 7750 (or whatever it is)? just in case I let someone use my bike and they think the indicated redline is the actual redline. I love this cluster this is the one improvement I would make. Your instructions and harness worked out perfectly.

so some more updates on the TT250 install.
everything else went smoothly, in fact the tach wire does not need a splice. it needs a T of 1 female barrel socket, 1 male barrel plug, and one female spade socket. the wiring on the TT has a single wire crimp barrel plug and socket right next to the socket for the gear indicator wires.

I have a friend with a rapid prototyping printer and I do CAD for a living so I'm going to work up a usable replacement speedo pickup for myself.

I use this for chainsaws, weedeaters and lawnmowers.
No reason it won't read a single cylinder bike.
Zip tie or rubber band it close to the plug wire. It retains in memory a high RPM reading.

Kohburn, I hear you on 12 hr days. I was on the road at 5:30 and just rulled into the drive tonight at 8:30. Here is the response from China.

After getting your sensors sizes, we checked our tech.dept,but there is slightly difference in sizes, but we think we have your sensors, maybe just your measurement torlarance.

one more thing, we need wheel hub sizes again from you, see first photo.

we attached our speed sensors specifications, you may tell which one is near your sensors. see second photo.
