Is it based off anything? Like a clone? Or completely its own design?

It's based on the Honda CG125, which we never saw in NA. It's a very popular motor in Asia, the UK and SA. I recommend that you read the Wiki story; it's interesting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_CG125
