Sprocket swap.

I have just completed the 50 to 40 tooth rear sprocket change. Used the data referenced from the sprocket compatibility section of this site. Everything went very well. As my bike has a 16 inch rear wheel, the motor was screaming for mercy at 55 MPH. I'm now able to hit 55 without the motor sounding like it's about to fly apart. Did have to remove 2 links from the chain.

First gear is now useful and not a granny low. Overall the bike seems more in it's power band through the gears..probably psychological though.

Liver just curious what does your gear look like? Is it a 4 bolt pattern if so was wondering where you bought yours from thx. Reason im askin i dont care for the 15/54 combo i have on my dirtbike the vx250pr it has a 4 bolt patter was thinkin more of a 13/50 combo something of the sort some input would help lots too =). Its just geared way low for my tastes

Darkwolf, I think you'll find 13/50 to be slightly lower than 15/54 you already have.

If you want taller gearing go something like 15/52 or 15/50, or if you can fit a 16 up front do that and keep the 54 (or even go 52.) -- dropping the front sprocket 1 is like adding 3 to the rear.

If you're looking for a bit more top end like I was, then larger front sprocket and smaller rear is the way to go. My sprockets are the same as the rest of the DS's represented on this site. The main section of this site has a tech section that tells you which Honda sprockets fit our bikes. In my case I ordered a JT Sprockets #428-40 tooth for a 1975 CB 125. I got mine from BikeBandit, because they are more or less local to me. It is a 4 bolt sprocket.

Incidentally, my bike came with a 15 front and 50 rear which would top out at about 55 MPH at which point my motor was screaming. I can npw comforably run at 55. As previously posted, my bike is running a 16" rear wheel. I cam now hit about 65 before the engine is screaming. This now fine for me as this is a off-road bike only.

There are a few dealers on this site that can help with your sprocket needs and questions... Darkwolf & Broken40, there are alot of posts on here about what ur asking... Higher# front+ Smaller#rear= Taller gearing, and vice versa...

I currently have a 54t rear, not sure on the front. What do you think about only changing the rear to a 44t ? let me know if i need to change the front as well.

Im not sure what gearing I would need. it seems that all the info that I found is for dual sporting. my son is 5'9" 160lbs. he can only go 40-45 max. the rest of us ride drz 400's and a yz 490 lol, so needless to say we always have to wait for him. i know this thing has more power than it's geared for, just not sure how much power. if we get the top speed to 55-60mph will the bike have enough balls to pull up hills? we ride stoddard wells and a place off of the 138. so i guess if everyone let me know the gear size they run and the max speed they get and how well your bike pulls up hills? Thanks everyone.

I think you're still going to be waiting for him no matter what you do. -- old 490 'eh... gotta love the big bore 2 strokes.

I don't know what kind of bike your son has, but I think dropping 10 teeth on the back is a good start for you. These little 4 strokes have a surprising amount of torque and it should still be ok on hills -- depending on what kind of hills you're talking about, and possibly on the skill level of your son.

Hmm, i guess i shoud have included that info, lol. the model # is VX200PR. my son is 16 and a fairly agressive rider. he's only been riding since the start of summer. he keeps complaining that its to slow but i know i can get more speed and power out of it with the help of this forum. oh, and we dont ride all that fast anymore, at least with the kids but 40-45mph is to slow on those long fire roads.
