Rubber noise reducers on cylinder head.
My Loncin OHC 200cc engine has about 6 of these rubber thingys pressed into the fins around the cylinder. Their purpose puzzled me and I removed them thinking they were just dirt traps that would contribute to overheating. (If anything, my guess was that they were designed to help the engine heat up quicker in cool climates.)
Anyway, it turns they are noise dampeners. And apparently pretty efficient ones to if this write up is anything to go by.... http://www.homebuiltairplanes.com/fo...reduction.html I couldnt find a mention of them here on chinariders so I thought I'd post it. I'll be putting them back on soon. It might get rid of some of the noises I'm hearing.

It was actually lovethegio's dirt bike thread that reminded me about them. You can see small ones in his 4th pic down.
Heres a pic of them on my bike.

If you don't use them on an old two-stroke, the noise and vibration is brutal. I never thought of using them on an air-cooled four stroke. Good idea.

I can't take credit. They are 'factory fitted.'

Ahh... A ZS169FML engine, running. Hopefully Mine will be in the same condition soon. It's interesting that they use the same bottom end as the 167FML, the differences being the cams/pushrods. I wonder why they used two different bores? 67mm vs. 69mm. Had that been the case mine would have been complete by now.
