it's probably stolen......right?

So im supposed to be buying some dirt bike tires from this guy. he has this post up on CL of this supermoto a 2009 CPI 250. I really want to get a supermoto like a DRZ440SM, or build my own. I dont have 3-4K sitting around, i do however have 600 (id negotiate lower of course). I know no title no sale, but never being registered i cant even check the VIN? or how can i do some homework on this. How does he not have a title from buying it from a "importer".

I can't help thinking something is "fishy" about that deal.

Perhaps you have access to a stolen vehicle database in the US. In Canada, we can use the CPIC website: http://www.cpic-cipc.ca/English/search.cfm

Fishy.

Also motor is based on the honda nx 250 sounds like the Pitster Pro abomination I owned. If its similar it's not worth $600 brand new.

Could be the owner has developed the bottom end and/or transmission problems this bike is famous for and is trying to unload it.

Also, especially in California, no title no sale.

FWIW last time I spotted a bike I though was stolen and I called the police who found out it was not. It was just wrecked and funny that was not mentioned in the CL ad.

Andy bought and flipped it amde some good $ in the process.

Indeed, a water cooled, NX250 clone is reminiscent of the Xingyue bike sold by Pitster Pro as the LXT 400.

Yes, but the Xingyue 250cc bike was air cooled. Xingue added a water cooled, Rotax cylinder to the top end of the engine to create the 400cc hybrid.

From the research I did last night people seem to say they are pretty reliable, it is the Internet and everyone's stories different. I see people saying dont get the bike I have now cause its crap, and I ride it like its stolen for over 2000miles with little issue. I do enjoy wrenching on it and learning.

Fastdoc how can I check for the issues you had. And how can I tell if it's a pitster pro. Do you think you got a dud?

The Xingyue/ Pitster Pro 400LXT is similar to the bike you are looking at. It is the worst CB we have ever come across on this forum. No one was happy with the bike and no one successfully put any real miles on it. I hold the record with about 1,500 miles before it developed a rod knock signaling almost certain catastrophic engine failure.

Bummer. Oh well too good to be true. I'll just wait till winter buy a cheap dual sport and build it myself, that will be more fun and give the old man and myself a winter project.

I agree.

I bet the selection of used dualsports in your area is excellent.

There are tons, I look at CL everyday and they come and go pretty quick. Since summer has come around the prices have shot up a ton, that's why I'm waiting till winter unless I find a great deal. As you can tell though my money is burning a hole in my pocket.

I am not so sure the doc is correct about the CPI brand of bikes. These are Korean made and although little seen in the US are sold worldwide and supposedly big sellers in Europe. The quality has been compared to the big 4 and I have read reviews of this bike from big name reviewers/magazines that are very favorable. If it was me I would at least spend a little time investigating, by all reports I have read this would be a MUCH better bike than even a UM brand.

I would listen to Driller, and at least take a look at that bike. The 250cc Xingyue bikes were air cooled, so I believe Driller when he says this bike was made in Korea. However, the lack of a title is still problematic.
