Yeah, all that horsepower comes at a cost. I once bought a very well used 267 Chev engine to rebuild for a car project I had, and it was so worn that the timing set pulled off by hand! Despite that, there was no wear in the bores, and you could still see the original cross-hatch pattern. I literally honed the cylinders and re-used the original pistons with new rings. the lack of horsepower in the original setup also meant a lack of heat, which minimized wear.

The stock HP rating was a dismal 120, and it was 200 when I was through. That's not exactly spiltting atoms, but it was a noticeable improvement.

At least engines like yours don't take a lot of effort to rebuild, nor do they require a hoist.

I have been looking at a WR450 to replace the XR250...
I want the Yamaha as I will put a rekluse clutch in it...
the rekluse clutch is a auto clutch that also has the ability
to oparate as a manual clutch aswell... 8O

I'd prefer the WR. Better gearing on top for dual sport use, and an electrical system for the lights, as well as an electric start.

The Yamaha's and Kawasaki's are the most reliable and durable of the 400-450 race bikes also.

For the type of riding I will use it for I don't want
a motor thats 2 strung out like the full blowen motocross versions..
A Husky is what I would realy like... engine life/parts cost etc I
don't think I will be going there..

My 'dream' off-road bike is a fuel injected WR450. I'd put a plate on it and call it perfect. 8)

I also like the Husky's, and Husabergs and KTM's etc but they are all very expensive to buy and maintain. The Hondas and Suzukis tend to explode, and I don't think there's an enduro version of the fuel injected KX450.

I love the 450s. I have a crf450, and just finished doing the headgasket. Took a couple hourscuz the head is really squashed in between the big chunky aluminum honda frame. Then my buddy knocked all my valve shims off the cam assembly when I went to install it. So now I have to re gauge everything UGH.

Its super nice out so I'm takin the kx250 out. I love 2 strokes but over time the fuel economy and mixing fuel gets to be a pain. Also my kx has too tall of first gear which is really annoying for trail/woods riding.

If I could pick any 450 I would take the ktm, then probably yamaha. I just bought the honda cuz it was $750 needing the headgasket.

Really good work!

As far as being The King Of Craigslist I dinged my crown on the YZ. With that said I got a great bike at a good price, but it was not the steal I had thought.

You were probably treated fairly. In this day, that's a blessing.

You might be unseated. Midlife found that Gio Beast quad for me for $50.00.

As much as I didn't want to invest more money in the YZ I did just replace the muffler with an excellent new FMF Q4 with a spark arrestor. I already have tinnitus and some hearing loss and would rather spend the money that hurt my health later. The original FMF Powercore 4 was way too loud, even after a repacking. It was the old syle and newer quiet tips/cores could not be retrofitted.

The result is outstanding. MUCH quieter and it seems to have had no negitive effect on performance.

I am now considering the same change on the KLX, although I have about $400 invested in the TBR pipe, and spending yet another $350 does not appeal to me. Maybe I can find a buyer for my like new TBR pipe? I have the Powercore 4 from the YZ for sle on eBay, maybe I'll recoup a little of the investment.
