starting scooter for the first time this spring, starts but

so it is a gy6 with a brand new 150cc motor.

I put the motor in last fall and it started and ran great! i put maybe 10 miles on it.

then it sat the winter. in a cold garage...

I put a new battery in it and tried starting it, now the garage is still about 40 degrees. but it starts then sputters out and dies. as the motor warms from starting a but it will run just a bit longer and a bit longer.

but the most it will stay running is about 20 seconds.
give it any gas and it dies

is it just because it is cold?

here is what i found...
moved the needle up one= no difference
moved the needle down one no difference

took air filter cover off and started and manually plugged the intake and let air in when it was about to kill= THIS Worked!

so whats up is this an automatic choke? cus there is no choke pull that I see anywhere.

is it an electronic choke?

there are two wires going to a little device on the carb.




BTW the needle was factory 1 from the top ( meaning the needle was out more is this ok?

so it is the choke. that is causing the prob but why it worked last fall. i guess there is wak that melts as the motor warms causing the choke to un-choke

so, had an old carb laying around,m,

swapped the choke thing still... nothing new.

put the old choke on the old carb and swapped the old for the new

and it is working.

so what would happen over the winter to make a brand new carb stop working?

i dismantled it and didnot see anything abnormal. no plugged jets nothing ??? all the gaskets were great.

I think you solved your issue. The choke is electric. It needs power to work. Maybe it is not getting power. You may find that solution to the headlight too.

I just replaced the choke on my buddy's 50cc GY6 today, because of a similar symptom. As you say, there is a wax bulb in the device, and it is heated via the two wires that connect to it. Once the wax heats and liquifies, the needle is allowed to move.

If the heating element fails, the wax will remain solid, and you'll have a hard time warming it up. BTW, the replacement choke was $24 OTC.

Is it possible that you had some varnish clogging up the pilot jet? I'd dismantle and clean the carb.

possible it was clogged, but it was a brand new motor/carb with 10 miles on it.

If it sat with any fuel in it then it can be clogged.
