Giox31-250 airbox issue

Today I swapped out the stock chain for a better quality Jap chain. The original was stretching too fast and I didn`t want it to break.
Anyway thought it would be a good time to do a pre-ride inspection. The usual check all fasteners, check oil, clean the filter....uh oh...
Found the airbox (which shares the same comparment with the battery) full of mud, sand and rocks. Looks like I found a design flaw. In order to remove the air filter, you must remove the battery, pull out the baffle that divides the two compartments and unscrew the filter. The airbox breathes forward uner the seat, but the battery compartment is open to the rear fender.
Looks like I`ll have to mod an internal fender for the rear.

I`ll take picts, but how do I post them on this site?

How to share your photos

I hope that helps.

Good luck with the mud flap

I took the bowl off the stock carb on my beast today and there was some crud in there I was thinking may have come in through the airbox... I'm thinking my new UNI filter will be a good addition. I may fab up a mud flap for under it too.

Hell ya, i love the snow, getting lots of miles on my sled, we already had lots of snow and during my 13hr ride on saturday we got about 10 more inches. My GIO toys are parked for the winter.

I took a piece of styrofoam and cut it into a rectangular piece that fit just behind the battery and made contact with the bottom of the seat. I shaved and cut it until it just barely fit and with the seat bolted down, made a good seal. I took it out and wrapped it in electrical tape so that it wasn't as friable and no more mud going into the airbox.
You also want to mount the crank-case breather tube on the top nipple of the air box, not the lower one. The bike went through a large water hole last summer and it got into the snorkel of the airbox, and drained right into the crankcase tube into the oil. There is a drain plug/see-through hose on the bottom, you want to remove that in case the air box gets flooded. If you don't ride water holes and never will, then don't worry about it.

I had the same problem with my GIO X31. Had to remove the whole airbox to hose it out (had to detach part of the rear frame). I hadn't considered the styrofoam fix any other options tried out there? I was considering using some plastic to fab out a mud guard to protect the battery area. My sons Baja DR125 has a mudguard under the seat and the air box breathes to the side.

Any suggestions on an improved filter for the GIO? I read about UNI pods and K&N but models and pics would be helpful. Thanks
