Well, I did it........

Remember all the talk about the "500cc single" China bike that we couldn't find.
Well, I got that idea stuck in my craw and I finally found one, 'cept it's German.
Same as Chinabikes in a way.......they're currently out of production and parts are kinda hard to come by. Lotsa cross reference and do-it-yourself.

2002 MZ Skorpion Tour.
I thought about getting the Sport Cup version (full fairing and clip-on bars) but the kids nixed that and insisted on the bare-bike Tour. (hey, I have to live with 'em.)
660cc, 5 valve, liquid cooled Yamaha single.
Gonna leave it box stock for now and see how it goes.

I'm not much a of a road bike guy, but I find the exhaust route interesting. Probably great to keep the heat off your leg, but I certainly wouldn't want to high center that thing or you'll choke it out.

Looks cool though, and I expect the germans know how to manufacturer so it's probably built well!

The Germans cloning Japanese technology? The world has officially come full circle.

Definitely keeps the hot stuff out of the way. It'll definitely be staying on the pavement and not going over too many speed bumps. 8O

German company, British designed frame, Japanese engine, Italian components........Gotta love it.
The company closed in December, '08. A couple of their ex-GP racers have bought the rights and are starting back up on 125cc production.....whoo-hooo

Bit more

I've put 150 miles on it so far. Easy, easy, it's still in the break-in period.

This is a 660cc Yamaha-based single. Water-cooled, 5-valve. Similar to what is in the Raptor 4-wheeler.
48hp, dual carb set-up (secondary is vacuum operated), 5 speed.
It runs 60mph at 3500 rpm in 5th, red-line is 7k.
Smoothest shifting bike I can recall riding.

When you wrap the throttle, there's the start of acceleration, then the 2nd carb comes on and it kinda jumps up faster 8) .
Bit like the old Holley 4 barrel double pumpers on a 302 V-8............
Quite a kick in the pants after riding the 200cc enduro around.
50mpg so far.

Handling is superb. Point and lean, it goes around the curve.
Need to change the line, no problem, which way do you want to go??
Comfort: wonderful seat, roomy bar reach, pegs seem just a tad high, but I'm getting used to it, not a lot of wind buffeting at speed.
Going to be a great commuter. Plan to add a wind-screen when cold weather hits.
Bill

According to the title I received from the previous owner, it was titled new with the MSO in Sept, 2008, 10 miles on the odo.
He put it up for sale at the delaer on consigment.
The dealer told me, "He rode it for 295 miles and "dropped" it on the left side, low speed. Put it in the garage and didn't ride it anymore."
Scratch on the left fork tube, 1 ding on the tank and the bar-end is scratched.
That's all I've been able to find..........

SNIPPED

All over the MZ owner site while I was researching. Lotsa good info there (just like here).

There's still a "new" (2004) Baggie at a local dealer here. I came real close to getting that, but my "wanna-be sport-bike knee-dragger" mind-set kept coming out.

The Tour has a great seat position between the enduro and full-on sport bike. I am very pleased with the choice I made and definitely having fun.
Headed to the "Dragon" when the weather cools off a bit.
