2 dead HSUNS, could use some help please

Strange.

My buddy's HSUN with 150 KM on the clock would quit while riding randomly and intermittently. It would die while riding or idiling or even switching gears. Sometimes it would restart, sometimes not. When it died it would be like you turned off the key. Tach goes to zero instantly. Lights stay on. A couple days ago I could not get it to start. Checked the spark it had none. Called SunnySports for a new CDI on an educated guess of the problem.

Rechecked the spark a few days later and it was there. Put the plug back in and it started, only to quit shortly afterwards and not restart. Recked for spark and there was none.

My bike, with 1500 off road KM's is starting to do the same thing, but less pronounced at this point.

I was riding it a little yesterday. 5th gear at 40 MPH and it just 'turned off' I was lucky and it restarted right away. I have noticed as of late a momentary quitting, as if someone touched the kill switch, as constant low speed, like trolling through the main street of a little town.

Any thoughts? I'm not in the mood to break down somewhere in the desert anytime soon.

I'm thinking of ordering a couple of those -performance' CDI's off Ebay.

On mine I have a bad wire connector in the CDI plug, so I cut/crimped all new terminal ends and all is good now.

I think I also remember of heat damaging the wires. I may have to pull the tanks to check for that. Is the CDI under the tank, seat, or a side panel?

The coil will be under the tank but the CDI will either be under the seat or side panel.

Also check the coil terminal ends for loose connections.

The CDI is under the seat on the left side above the battery. You can see it here in undertulsa picture, almost dead center with the rubber strap around it.

Check for the problem I had with mine. Check the wires going through the chain sprocket cover to the stator to make sure the wires are in the channel they are supposed to be and not crimped and shorting out. Mine ran fine for 20 miles and then stopped cold with no spark. If they are crimped it could account for the intermittent running as well. Mine is a HSUN. :?

I don't think this is your problem but on my Roketta, the spark plug wire was routed wrong and it touched the exhaust pipe bracket and melted and would occasionally short out.

I rode mine locally yesterday, and it seemed fine. I'd like an extra module in my tool kit though for longer rides.

My buddies will start right up. thrn die in 20 seconds or so. Definatly seems like ignition, it's just like hitting the kill switch. Then it will not restart. Sometimes if it sits long enough maybe but usually no. It is getting fuel, but no spark.

If you are sure you have no spark, I think the problem is the kill switch wiring, or CDI.

A stuck float in the carb might let just enough gas leak into the bowl while it was off, to give you 20 seconds of run time.

Three easy fixes that I remember I had with my long-forgotten Jetmoto enduro was a fuel delivery issue, no fuel (duh!!), and easily fouled spark plug. Don't know if that helps, but your friend's dying out bike and desert brings back some horrible memories of stalling in the desert heat :x and the fixes were easy-ish ones, until the bike died for good weeks later which is another sad, boring tale.
